Next car dilemma, really need advice.
Discussion
Looking to get myself a new car and have approx £10k to spend. Presently got a 2l diesel quashqai which I'm not really enjoying, it's a manual and a lot of my driving is around town a 6 mile each way journey to work. Before that I had an e46 330d which was a good motor but was old and wearing out, but do miss the grunt it had when I needed it.
I'd basically decided on a MB C class 220 estate and next car has to be an auto. But knowing the short length of journeys I'm really concerned about dpf issues arising, I've looked around for petrol alternatives but can only see the 180 and not sure if it's going to feel underpowered for me?
I've looked around for alternative cars but really struggling to find much I fancy available in petrol/auto versions, vast majority seem to be diesel!
I'm willing to listen to any alternative cars suggested in petrol auto versions but must be either estate or reasonable sized hatchback as I ferry 2 kids and a dog around as well as frequent trips to the tip in summer with garden waste.
Appreciate any help, going round in circles at the moment.

I would still go look at a c class or e class estate . In 250 flavour if you want a bit of grunt. 350 flavour for the proper job! As long as you give them the odd run out I don't think they suffer too badly with dpf issues.
Touch wood!!
My E 350cdi is doing pretty much 30mpg round town with a ten mile crawl to work 3 days a week and a longer 50mile trip on Fridays. When it warms up a bit they are really pretty frugal on run.
If you want a Merc estate I think you need to take a bit of a leap of faith and trust that mercedes engineers thought of your type of scenario and catered for it. Don't take what you read on the internet about diesels as gospel. Even if you did get a dpf issue you can get them cleaned out relatively cheap. You can probably also mitigate things by using she'll v power ever other tank or so. That's what I'm doing and so far good. Had a few cars now and this is my first Merc, I love it.
Oh and the mbuk forum isn't full of reported dpf issues, in fact I think I've it ever seen one!

Thanks for the replys so far. I have considered the octavia vrs and as you say does indeed tick a lot of the boxes, I just think the I'd only really like the new shape as the older one is looking quite dated now but the new one is probably beyond my budget unfortunately.
Really do like the Merc, and I'd definitely set my heart on one but just getting jittery about the possibility of dpf problems. You could well be right and more is indeed made of the fear of things going wrong than the actual reality.
I think more than likely I would go down the petrol option route to feel a little safer about it but there's hardly anything about at all, and I really want the 2011 facelift design as well, as you say maybe a leap of faith is required!

Yeah. It's a late 2011 with the 7g box. Once it's warmed up you don't know it's there. It's lovely.Problem with wanting a petrol Merc is there aren't any! Other issue is certain V6 engines are prone to balancer shaft problems, your budget will probably put you in that area???
I really wouldn't fuss about the dpf. Worst case, it throws a wobbler, you get it cleaned out and crack on. There must be thousands up thousands of diesel engines doing the school run happily for years with no bother.

Cheers pal, no doubt there's plenty doing the school runs, my son has a 2010 e class saloon that his missus potters about in, he's only had it a few months but fine so far.Problem with wanting a petrol Merc is there aren't any! Have a look at this place ^^
They've got a few C class estates in your budget range. They've got a really good rep and I was prepared to buy a car from the unseen and travel down from Leeds to collect. They just didn't have what I needed in stock in my budget with what I needed. My main criteria was the 7 seat option E class.
Good luck finding something.
Check MBclub forum classifieds too. You might get lucky.

Great seats
Plenty of room
Downsides:
MPG of about 15
Stress if anything sounds poorly!
Connects to phone but doesnt play music through it
Too quiet for a 5.2L
