Having gone round in circles over the last few months and having posted in here a few times, think I've finally settled on the next family wagon. Main problem has been having too long to think about it!

So looking to replace a 2015 leased Tiguan, that goes back in May, with an A4 Allroad.

Looking at 2014/15 used options and have narrowed it down to a few potential cars.

Main factor is whether to go manual or DSG, thinking manual at the moment as it will likely be a long termer for 4/5 years and think the simplicity of the manual might give a bit more peace of mind.

Miles don't really justify a diesel but there are only 3 petrols within my search of under £16 and less than 60k miles, so will go with the overall package for the right car rather than being lead by fuel.

Anyone had any experience of them?

Nice looking car in my opinion.

I've only sat in one for a twenty min ride to a train station when my A1 was in for a service. I liked it.

The other snippet of information I have is that when looking at leasing one of these last year (I went for an A6 saloon) I gathered that the A4 Allroads do not have the adjustable suspension as per the A6 Allroad. I don't know if this has been the case for every generation of A4 Allroad though.

The A4 has drive select as an option, whereas I think the A6 has it as standard. Have to confess I'm not too bothered about that aspect, what appeals is the quattro and slightly raised drive height for ease of loading kids and family stuff and the smoother drive that comes with it.

Was very impressed with the petrol S tronic version I drove at the weekend, although the car itself wasn't what I was looking for - pre face lift, cloth seats and higher miles, and all at the top end of the budget. Still, good to get a feel for one.

DPF maybe an issue if you are doing lots of short runs, I have a VW 1.6TDI and do about 10k Miles a year, however mainly short 10 Minute drives. DPF light comes on once a Month. Bit of a pain but as long as you do one or two 30+ Minute drives a Week should be okay.

Yeah, I'm conscious of the DPF issue.

Although the Tiguan is a diesel and we've done 24k in it over the last 3 years without any DPF issues. Always tends to get at least 2 good runs a week and is driven enthusiastically to get the revs up.

It sounds like you want to buy the car, but have you considered leasing again? There are some great deals out there on the Allroad. We took delivery of a new one in January, very comfortable and a fantastic mile muncher. However, it’s quite a complex beast (drive select, Quattro, DPF etc) and I’m not sure I’d want to run one out of warranty. No right or wrong answer, but worth running the numbers to see which works best for you.

It’s a good point, and I hadn’t appreciated there were still some good deals on the Allroads – seem to be around £240 inc VAT on a 9+23.

However, I’ve made the conscious decision to buy something this time round – planning on keeping it longer term, if not running it in to the ground as an eventual second car.

No right or wrong but I think the total cost of ownership will be lower on a good lease deal than buying and running used. Plus of course you don’t have the anti diesel depreciation risk but benefit from the excellent economy.

I know what you're saying, but suspect we'll keep it for a minimum of 5 years and my man maths tells me that at that point it will still be worth a couple of £k, so can then either keep it as free motoring or use it against the next family wagon.

Go for it, they are a lovely car. Will be interested to see what you buy.

Sorry LP, I'm looking at used options and in the former B8 model.

Looks like a good spec though, enjoy!

I’ve just bought a regular A4 1.8 tfsi it’s a very nice car to drive but it’s so annoying how many things you would expect as standard are missing.

Even though it’s the outgoing black edition it doesn’t have heated seats or a fully auto electronic handbrake even rear cup holders were an option apparently!

I went manual but think I may regret it as I do a lot of driving in the city.

Ours (2018) is standard spec (leased, so you pay for any extras over 2 years so not worth it). However, the Allroad has a very good spec as standard (heated leather, auto, drive select, Quattro, park sensors, great in car tech, electric boot etc etc). It wants for nothing really. Yours, with a few extra bells and whistles, will be very nice indeed. Not sure where you are getting the power outputs from, ours is the standard TDi and is 190PS.

Its euro spec, they offer the car with two power outputs for the 2.0 tdi. The euro version also comes with bugger all options as standard so you have to get ticking.
