How do you stop "the creep"...
Discussion
Hi guys, long time lurker v sporadic poster...
It seems my lovely 1999 e36 323i has finally run its course, I am yearning for a new car but stuck in this strange flux in decision making..
Thinking being, I only do 2,500 miles a year, live in central London, car parked on the street and don't commute by car, got bikes for that... So do I really need a car? maybe, maybe not.. I hardly drive and don't stick loads of miles on, a my live for the moment head comes on, rather than the fiscal side so I could get something stupid and fun, or chill with the BMW until I move to the sticks and buy something really silly when i have a proper drive/garage etc
I started off thinking I'd go with maybe a £13k Z4 coupe as a fun upgrade, then the creep begins, Cayman Gen 1, then Gen 2, now Im bouncing around C63s, TTRs, M3E92's, Maser Grandturismos with say £27-30k cash the list is endless... when you do the running costs they are marginal even when some are half the mpg of others. parking permit is the same - insurance is a few hundred quid of each other
Maybe it is a matter of sticking with the e36, and joining a car club.. total mindf*** . Anyone else or just me?!

If you don't need a car, why drop 30k? Plenty of exciting cars that are a lot cheaper and if cheaper you can chop and change a lot more easily. It seems my lovely 1999 e36 323i has finally run its course, I am yearning for a new car but stuck in this strange flux in decision making..

Buy a £500 Fiat Panda with countless dents.
You'll relish the freedom of not being precious about the car, and you'll have more money tucked away for emergencies or at least in storage until you move somewhere where you can have a properly fun car plus a sensible one?
why a panda? could get a mk2 mr2 for 1500 quid. rwd and mid engined. or something like that. You'll relish the freedom of not being precious about the car, and you'll have more money tucked away for emergencies or at least in storage until you move somewhere where you can have a properly fun car plus a sensible one?
Unless you get out of London to some decent driving roads, regularly, what is the point of having a decent car whilst living there? Just seems like a very expensive hassle. Permits to park, extortionate insurance premiums & ruining a nice car with the stop/start 10mph average, or whatever it is.
Wouldn't bother. Get moved, then get a decent car.

Because this person lives in london. What's the point of having a nice MR2 or something like that when you have to drive around london's traffic and deal with all the speedbumps and potholes. Much better to just have something cheap and relatively disposable, unless they happen to live somewhere on the extreme edge meaning they can quickly get to the fun driving roads.
they presumably don't drive around central London hence why their annual mileage is so low and theyre considering quick cars Edited by Integroo on Wednesday 14th March 18:53

Stick with the E36 until you can get out of the smoke! You'll no doubt sleep better too, not worrying about your new pride and joy.
This was also my thought, at the moment you don't drive whats the point buying something now, unless you want to start driving again and have the time to, I was thinking a new Mazda MX5 just for joy of driving. You never stop "the creep", fact.
You will wake up one day have a rubbish day or go for a great drive or any number of any other possible random thoughts will enter in to your head.
You will justify something to yourself, doesn't really matter what, it'll be right for those 5 minutes.
You'll buy it , you'll live with it.
Don't fight it, enjoy the hunt.
I hope you end up with something you enjoy.

If you really don't need a car, then personally I would wait until you know what you're doing for a house and factor in both house and car at that point. You may find you need extra money to get the house that you really want (as we did), or that the extra money doesn't make much difference and you'd much rather have a more expensive car.
Thanks all... To add some context I'm 36, got the London house, had the e36 for 8 years and only got 75k miles on it..
Think i might just spend a fraction of the cost and get the Bimmer perfect, refurb wheels, leather etc. It will still only be £4ishk on the streets..
For all my life i have done the sensible thing, with any bonus or payrise etc, prime example was the last minute swerve when i wanted to buy a 911 at 25 and didn't means i now have my house..
But when you see things happen in your extended friendship group with people passing, it makes you question if nailing the overpayments on a mortgage really matter...
