IMO, biggest grin factor for your budget will be Saxo VTR. Not very quick at 0-60 in 9.X seconds, but reckoned to be great fun. Also massively outsold quicker VTS as they did some mega deals on them new. Consequently much cheaper, and will be available with lowish miles and good nick for your money.

RWD options at that price point without major bork factor, include MX5 (even good ones usually have some rust issues, so at £1K I hope you're a welder) and high mileage Beemer.

Also Puma. And you might get a leggy Fiesta 2.0 ST:

Swift sports are starting to knock on £1k..

But cheap as possible: 206 gti or puma.
