£500+ Tax Bracket!

I've been browsing the classifieds and really fancy an alfa 159 Q4. Currently they are excellent value to buy but i am really put off by the enormous annual road tax (£535!) which is well over 10% the value of the car.
I guess the reason they can be had so cheaply is this running cost... and this itself is a good negotiating tool on the buying price. But it really puts me off as i expect it will be very difficult to sell on in 5 years when the annual road tax is 30-40% of the purchase price!
Any thoughts on whether its likely to change tax brackets as it start to age further, or is always going to cost this much?

Its probably best to consider that you will likely be the last owner, and factor into your decision that the residual cost will essentially be scrap value (or breaking for parts). That way anything else is a bonus.

Unlikely. They've never done any other retrospective change to the way in which banding works, except when they brought in the <1550cc band back in the 90s. So 2001-17 cars are always likely to be CO2 taxed, and 2006-17 are going to have a pricier top band, right up until they hit 40yo.Thesprucegoose said:

My prediction is that cars that we’re already rareish or a bit different but with this problem, will become very rare and could become very desirable classics as they age and their numbers reduce. This will in turn push the price up and one day the tax/value issues will not matter a bit!

I bought a car that was top rate of tax. Even having just paid a very large amount of money for the car, having to then pay another £500+ to drive it away smarted a bit.
If the car is only a few multiples of the tax, it will put people off.
It used to be that it was sold with some tax, thus softening the blow. No longer.
my R32 is the same, cheap at twice the price!
i pay monthly at about £48 i think. it is just one of the inflated costs of running a V6, fuel will be mid 20's, the 4wd will need servcing etc.
as people have said, people buy these types of cars and cant afford to run them, hence loads of owners and a scrappy SH.
id buy it and to h*ll with the costs, it wont be long before you wouldnt be able to buy V6/8 cars then youll regret it

My point was though my focus st was probably only worth £5-600 and paying half or over half of the cars value in road tax a year was somewhat annoying

Actually, its more like £4 a week..
Realistically youre not going to be weighing up a zero VED car versus a 225g/km car, which means the other car is more than likely £305 a year.
£530-£305 = £225.
£225 / 52 weeks of the year = £4
Its really not much, especially when a tyre on a 225 g/km car is likely to cost around £200..
