I'm planning on buying a car this week, so just HPI checked it.

It's showing an alert - said alert is for a plate that used to be on the car, but is now on a Range Rover.

The alert shows that the owner of said plate has defaulted on the finance for the Range Rover - as I read it, anyway.

So - technically nothing to do with the car that I am looking at, but it's likely that the HPI check will always show an alert.

Can this alert be removed? My concern is that it'll affect resale - given that it's made me wary!

It's not a problem. Had it many a time and would not put me off a future buy.

Paying off the finance.

Seriously, don't worry about it. It's not an issue.

Car I bought showed a write off against its private plate (assigned at new), dates didn't tally with when it was on this car. A quick car to HPI confirmed all this and all was good to go.

Call them, they are helpful

This, sometimes they are able to remove the alerts.
