Enlighten me on what car
Discussion
Currently drive a golf gti performance pack and to fit a family of 4 (2 adults a 5yr old and a 2yr old) what is a decent family alternative
This is inspired by other threads where they say a golf is dull as dishwater
So here’s the criteria!
It has to fit all four of us in
Has to be good dynamically and quick ish
Has to be used all weathers no one trick pony this includes occasionally going over the moors in snow (the gti manages “just”)
Must be brand new
Looks are subjective but must be good looking
Can’t be too big of an engine as must return between 35-50mpg
Mustn’t be stupid to insure
Ideally flies under the radar and don’t get anyone breaking in at 3am
Must sound good
Must not upset customers (I looked at a macan and that did not go down well with customers when I had it for a day)
Must be a car that would suit a mid 30s bloke
Strong residuals
So I have the gti performance pack which is actually pretty good just the fake £1700 leather pisses me off! I’m looking to order in the next 12 month so what do people recommend
I’m currently transfixed with the rs3 apart from its a thief magnet but I see it fits the bill!

Most of those requirements steer you towards a fairly mundane car, and to satisfy them all will put you in something that many will describe as dull (maybe they have a list of needs that allows much more exciting options that you’d rule out because of seats or economy or theft risk etc)
I wouldn’t worry too much as long as the golf works for you.

What was upsetting your customers about a macan?
Well we supply equipment to pubs which pay a rental and let’s be honest pubs are shutting so when you have a 34yr old engineer (ppl usually drive vans or estate cars) turning up in a “Porsche” it just winds them up and upsets them! They see it as they’re paying for it and whilst they’re struggling you don’t appear to be! Hence when my dad goes to site he doesn’t use his Range Rover he uses a lesser car and I use my golf (which has garnered a few comments believe it or not)
So it has to blend in somewhat what I like about the Audi is you can’t tell the difference between the lower model and the rs which is bad but good for my situation and it has that glorious engine!

The golf is a lot of fun and despite ppl thinking it’s dull I don’t think it is! I’ve had mine for 2yrs and been all over in it! It handles superbly is pretty quick ish and not bad on fuel
That’s great, as I said, enjoy the car :-)My point was that people who have less restrictions in car selection may find a golf dull. Don’t get hung up on what others think.

People love to slate the cars that are the best of the bunch, I'd ignore the reviews. So here’s the criteria!

For your above description your Golf fits it perfectly.
If you want to add 4wd for the moors then go Golf R or Audi S3/RS3 but they may not fit in with your criteria of not being high to insure, not getting nicked, and doing 35+ mpg.
And I'm not sure they'd fit in with "strong residuals" either.
Some of the Bmw's people have suggested are great, but again strong residuals?
I personally think the Golf Gti with performance pack is a great car, if you go to higher performance it wont fit in with your above criteria.

Quite hard to tick all the boxes on your requirement list.
I think a Skoda Superb 260 Estate would be worth a look though.
He wants a car less dull than a Golf GTI, and you suggest a Skoda Superb Estate? I think a Skoda Superb 260 Estate would be worth a look though.
Quite frankly, OP, I think that you won't get anything properly interesting that hits all your requirements, especially as you appear to be ruling out RWD, so why not stick with the Golf.

He didn't actually say he needs something less dull than a Golfl. He said other people have said the golf is dull. And as you also acknowledged, meeting every requirement is unlikely so I chucked in another option that meets many of the criteria. Edited by Gad-Westy on Wednesday 21st March 11:34
Anything more focused will be compromised for carrying passengers (i.e. less comfortable) and when carrying passengers you can't or at least shouldn't drive in a manner where a Golf GTI isn't more than enough car. It also would never be that fun as it will have to be fairly large, closed top and refined. If I were you I would keep the Golf for passenger duties and day to day driving and get a small cheap convertible RWD sports car for when you're by yourself such as an MX5 or MR2 roadster.
I’m not ruling rwd out but come winter I am in the service industry and when I get a call u go to it, there’s no chance of it been left for another day and that to me rules rwd out tbh it kind of rules fwd out as I did get stuck on the most pathetic bit of snow on a slight incline and had to dig myself a track
I’m thinking 4wd just for hose times when I need it!
My wife suggest a 3dr golf R as they’re not as wanted by balaclava toting scum! The budget I have is 15-20k deposit and then a monthly payment of max 300!
The rs3 with 10k of options after discount is 53k and the monthly payment is 295 a month on a pcp
Or the new golf R that will be out will roughly work out 300 a month but I will own it after 5 yrs but I swap cars every 4yrs or 5yrs maximum
The golf would give me probably a 15-20k deposit at the end of term for another whereas on pcp the rs3 would be possibly worth 30 which would leave me with 8–10k for another car but I get to experience an RS
Also autocar came this morning and the new golf R looks lovely
