Hi,

I'm 18, and my Honda Civic's insurance runs out this summer, by which point I'll be 19, and hope to get a new car.

It needs to cost no more than around £2500, and no more than around £2000 to insure. It needs to reliable, and I want something with good performance, and either RWD or AWD, with a manual. So far, the only cars which tick all these boxes are an E34 BMW 525i or an E39 BMW 530i.

What other cars should I consider?

PS any BMW 3 Series other than the 4 cylinder models are too expensive to insure.

Is a 5 series really what you want to be driving at 19? You have your whole life to drive big barges.

Why don’t you just wait if you can’t insure what you actually want?

1 or 2 years NCB?

If you want to buy a reliable car buying a 15 year old 5 series for £2000 is not the way to do that.

I’ve got an E34 525i, I love it but it’s a proper barge of a thing... BMW + manual doesn’t automatically mean sporty sporty world beating handling.

When I turn 19/3 years NCB, I shall be looking for an MX5 to daily. RWD, small, good power to weight. Fling it through some roundabouts and B roads, what more could you want at 19! As others have said, not sure how reliable they are (though I know very little about those particular BMWs). MX5s, Mini Cooper S R53, Honda Accord Type R, Ford Puma 1.7 are all things that are reasonable on insurance for a young person (though each car has their own problems)

325ti's are far less to insure than their coupe / saloon counterparts due to the rarity of the cars and the fact that they are hatchbacks.

At that age that's all I ever wanted to drive. I just couldn't afford to insure and run them. Now in my late 20s and I'm a barge-aholic!
