AWD or FWD Seat Cupra ST ?
Discussion
Golf R estate lease is up in 6 months and look to replace with similar car. No Golf R deals about so looking at the Leon Cupra ST. Best deal is for the FWD version with the AWD version around £60 per month more. I drive on mainly rural type A & B roads and the added traction from the AWD on the Golf is something that comes in useful on our often wet roads. Reviews comment the the FWD Leon struggles with the power and can be a bit of a nightmare. Now I like a bit of power, but can’t say I am driving god who is max it out ! So does anyone have experience of the a Leon FWD struggling all over the place. On the surface of things I would go with the FWD and bag the £60 pm, but if it is a real handful, I would shell the extra £60 pm out. Not that bothered by DSG box prefer manual. Thanks

I currently have the FWD Cupra hatch and came from a Golf R hatch last October.
Out of the two the Golf is the better car, not just on interior quality but more importantly the drive and how the power is deployed. The Cupra does really struggle to put the power down in the first three gears in anything worse than damp conditions. It also, to me at least, feels 'looser' and less well controlled in the dry. It's not a massive issue as it's predominantly a DD / work car and most of that time is in traffic or motorway use.
If the extra cost isn't an issue I'd go with the 4wd as it just works better as a package IMO, I've not driven the 4wd Cupra but expect it's similar to the Golf in terms of the traction.

I test drove both and after nearing the end of 2 years battling with RWD traction on an M135i I realised the FWD ST would be just as frustrating so went for the 4Drive, might be less fun (when I'm in the mood) but for the majority of the time it will just be more surefooted
It’s just a shame the Seat doesn’t have the brilliant motor of the M135i.I’d definitely go for the AWD version though as the FWD desperately struggles for traction in many different conditions. I’ve not driven the AWD variant but I’d imagine it drives well being from the family of cars.
Thanks for the replies. Carrying out a bit of a balancing act. Tyres will need replacing around 20k if I am lucky, currently on 17k.Much longer and complete set required, so would need to run for an extra year to get value from them. Can't get the extended 1 yr figure until 10/04, but expect it will be around the £300 mark, the same as a new AWD Cupra. However you can' t help thinking £300 pm can get you more than a Cupra. Hence the FWD at £240 seems a better deal, but felt the points about the drive and traction compared to Golf would be the case. Hoping for Golf R deals next month then.
