Been looking at these as a possible all rounder, 2005/6, between 90k - 120k miles, ticks all my boxes on paper, but have no experience of them at all... Any downsides, particularly with the mileage (turbo?), or known weak points?

Any views and opinions welcomed... thanks in advance..

The 2.0tfsi is known for liking oil so bear that in mind.

Also look for the 3.2 A3 I don't know what your budget is but these can be had for sensible money:

Brilliant thumbup
I was aware they did a larger lump but hadn't looked at these, I've never had or even driven anything with flappy paddles smile I'm liking the first one a lot...

Thanks again smile

Would you consider a similar vintage Golf GTi? Less solid inside, but great cars and similar (or even the same?) engine.

I wouldn't rule it out, but I've set myself a budget of £3.5K.... Got rid of my last daily/all rounder back in January, which was a Golf Mk3 VR6, had it for 4 years, great engine smile Would like an R32 but it's out of budget unfortunately... The 5 door Sportback Quattro ticks a lot of boxes for me... smile

Thanks for the suggestion

The 3.2 is a slightly detuned R32 so don't feel to bad about not getting one.

From what I've read, the Mk5 GTI is the better car. Engine is the same.

My missus had a 2006 tfsi from new for 10 years. It wasnt too bad on the oil but she used to top it up - 800 miles, 1/4 litre a month iirc

What was more of a issue was cam lobe wear relating to the high pressure fuel pump (lobe material too soft). There was a class action in the USA to replace them. Obv we got shafted with no support. This cost her £1000 to get it fixed! Apart from that was very reliable.

The 2.0 TFSI Mk5 GTI is within budget, and very appealing, but I really need the extra space of the A3 sportsback, and the Quattro is an added bonus smile

Read up a bit on the 3.2 sportsback Quattro and one of the road testers was banging on about understeer, but typically I'd be very unlikely to be pushing it to the point where it was a problem on the Queens highway.... I do the occasional track day which gets rid of the need for speed on public roads biggrin

I had an A4 with the 2.0 TFSI engine and in addition to all said above it was a good engine - smooth and torquey although it lacked any kind of charisma, and it really liked to drink. However the same engine in the Golf GTI 6 I tried sounded pretty fruity with the standard exhaust.

All Audi's had a really long list of extras so you need to hunt your spec carefully. I'd recommend the Audi Sat Nav Plus with colour display, Bose speaker upgrade, full glass roof and xenons if you can find one.

Regarding understeer on the 3.2, the 2.0 is more than 100kg lighter so may not be so prone.

Good thing on the A3 is that if you fancy the Auto, you get the S Tronic box in either fwd or Quattro application however with the A4 you got the decent ZF 6 speed tiptronic on the Quattro and the utterly dreadful chocolate CVT on the fwd.

Nice cars and look good as a Sportback.
