Family Wagon - Spend £5k or £10k

Sadly I am looking at swapping out my excellent Z4 this summer for something a little more family friendly. Weekends are currently filled with Bicycles paddleboards and paragliders so I have a transit van for mucky work and the Z4 for the day to day.
However we now have our first child on the way and neither the Z or the Transit is really ideal for the job - big estate will will cover everything perfectly.
So here is my dilemma - Id be happy with a Mondeo or a Superb or similar the question is what to spend. As as example
£5k buys me

80k miles Mondeo diesel - would certainly do the job and there are a few about at this price - low running costs and just a basic tool - drive for 3 years and 60K miles or until dead.
£10k would buy me

30-40k miles Mondeo and it i'd likely find leather and a few niceties along with a newer car
You can find Skodas, volvos etc that fall into these categories 5k basic 10 year old car with 70-80k or 10k nicer 5 year old car with 40k.
Id like an opinion on what the masses would pick. In my mind the cheaper car with money in the bank would be best - its just a tool so just something cheap to buy and run - however it feels like a step down from my Z4 and the newer car has a bit more appeal.
