Hi everyone,

I want to sell my Elise and Audi A3 diesel and go to one useable but fun car. As I just do not use my Elise and the a3 is boring.

DC5 and the RS Megane are my favourites but has anyone got any opinions?

I love the look of the DC5 and they are supposed to drive really well. However the age of them is a big concern.

Is it worth going with the newer Renault? I had a pax ride around oulton Park in one and was impressed.

age (or mileage) shouldn't be any concern at all for a DC5. The mechanicals are very solid, and the k20 takes abuse all day long as long as you keep the oil topped and don't thrash it from cold.

They suffer a little with rust on the rear arches, but that isn't a problem on some depending on how much uk winter salt they've seen. Mine has been in the UK 11 years and is pretty much rust free.

I genuinely forget mine is a 16 year old car tbh. Parts can be a little expensive, being a honda...and aftermarket stuff is ££££.

They are holding value very well, and steadily increasing, so if depreciation is a factor for you, this is worth considering.

Absolutely love mine and won't be parting with it for some time if i can help it. It's bone stock apart from a cold air intake and it drives beautifully. Handles better than my old mx5 which had quite a few suspension mods and tweaks.

any questions, shoot, i could ramble on about DC5s all day!

Thanks for the reply. I had an ep3 ctr and didn’t like it because of the electric power steering. I believe the dc5 is hydraulic though.
I don’t like depreciation so a DC5 will probably be the car for me. They still look modern in my opinion as well.
I would want a standard one, just good brakes and tyres and I would imagine I would be happy

No complaints about steering feel on my dc5 at all, although i've never driven an EP3.

Most up for sale are fairly standard, they fetch a lot more money unmodified and cared for. Budget £7k+ for a serviceable one, £9k+ for a very tidy low miler.

The only down sides i can think of, is the turning circle is fairly big, and visibility out the back of the car isn't great.

Mpg wise i probably average high 20s. You can get it past 40mpg on long motorway runs, and below 20mpg if you hoon around in vtec a lot. 99RON is a must, they're not mapped to run on 95 being an import.

They're super practical, rear seats fold down to form a pretty big load area in the rear, used mine to move house last year, fitted a whole wardrobe in it.

The Honda wouldn't get a look in, for me. Meg 250/265 all day for one car to do it all. Saying that, i'm not massive on Honda but big on Renaultsport, so maybe there's a slight underlying bias there biggrin

and pretty much the exact opposite for me! They're both good cars so it's personal pref really.

Thinking of depreciation as a factor, the DC5 will fare much better than the megane.

I suppose the megane will be a much nicer drive everyday than the DC5 though (more low-end torque etc.)

The K20 is such a gem of an engine (speaking from owning my EP3 (forget the st steering)), and I find any modern turbo motor I've driven hard to top the experience.

I'd say the Megane depending on your budget if you find a Lux with the Cup Chassis & Recaros you'll lose very little (obviously that's dependent on annual mileage) in terms of depreciation.

Ive owned 2 Megane 250s (Both CUP and 1 remapped) and currently have a DC5.

It really depends what your main use is imo.

My drive to work is extremely short, circa 2 miles, it barely gets warm and they are really painful when cold, theyre a bit jumpy and the gearboxes can be a little stubborn until theyre up to temperate, exactly like my old S2000 so i knew this coming into the car. The suspension isnt very forgiving and the seats arent great on even an hours drive. Having said that, if you just go out for a drive then it really is a spectacular machine, i would say its easily the best to drive out of any car that i have owned when thats the sole intention of the drive. I went for a lovely drive this morning and it was absolutley fantastic.

Im back on the lookout for another megane now, i think its the better overall package to be completely honest. As long as you get the CUP chassis its easily as capable albeit with less feel than the teg, comfortably faster and even more so when you arent in the mood to rev the nuts off the car. You also get the interior creature comforts if you buy the correct model.

Only downsides of the megane is they depreciate pretty quickly, youll spend months finding one with a decent spec (Full fat with cup, recaros, xenons and RS monitor) and the cambelt is a pretty expensive job. The DC5 WILL appreciate over the time you own it,almost guaranteed and it has one of the most reliable performance engines ever. The DC5 is also a lot easier to buy with the right spec, C Pack is nice but wouldnt really be missed if it wasnt on your chosen car.

If youre interested in my mint low miler DC5 C Pack then let me know wink in in east sussex

Have you considered a gt86 similar to dc5 but rwd. Lots of ex lotus elise owners move onto them as a slightly more practical but still fun to drive alternative. (Even allowed on lotus on track track days still).

Thanks for the replies everyone, definitely good for thought. Dub would you email me spec/ pics and the price you are looking for please. I aren’t in the position to buy yet as will need to sell my Lotus first.

I have thought about a GT86 as well, I had a very quick test drive of one a few years ago. I liked it but the fake noise in the cabin really spoilt it for me.

It's all personal opinion really. The DC5 will appreciate, but will probably be more expensive to maintain. The Megane will be faster, have more modern technology and will be a nicer place to sit on a daily basis.

I'd go with the Megane personally, but that's me.

They even come with a plug to block off the induction noise pipe, so wouldn't let this put you off.

This shouldn't even be a debate, DC5 all day long. However, as usual, it is down to personal preference. Drive both and see which YOU prefer

I'll have to disagree based on my experience of buying one of the last Cup-S 2 years ago.

Ok maybe not such a slow depreciator as the DC5 but the 4-year warranty and a more recent car probably makes up for it.

They're both brilliant cars to drive, that's for sure.
