Rapid automatic or dsg small hatch. £8000?

You'll have more choice going for the next size up, so Golf size. As said above, the Ibiza Bocanegra's were plagued with doomed engine from the very start. I've looked at them before but they're just not worth the hassle, IMO. The Skoda Fabia vRS's are in the same boat too, as are the same year of Polo GTI's.
Mini Cooper S automatic? You could get an R53 Cooper S for half your budget, but they are rare. The R56 is an option but suffers the dreaded timing chain issue which can take the engine out with it. They sorted it for the later facelift models i believe but not sure if they'd be in your budget.
Smart Forfour/Fortwo/Roadster Brabus? Audi A1 S-Tronic? Abarth 500 MTA? Alfa Mito Quadrifoglio Verde? Stretching your budget slightly could get you an early Clio 200 EDC, or maybe a Cat C/D example.

If you want a rapid Auto it's hard to look past these, although they're from the next segment up they're a good shout.

The Bocanegra, Skoda Fabia VRs and Polo GTI all have the same 1.4TSI engine, Either CAVE engine code or CTHE. CAVE engines were made between 2009-2012 and CTHE between 2012-2015. The CAVES were problematic, the CTHE’s has various improvements designed to stop the engine failures. They drink a lot of oil too.
However despite all of this I still want one, currently looking for the right VRS. A fully comprehensive Skoda Extended Warranty is £208 a YEAR, or £16 a month on a 2011 car with 60000 Miles, an absolute no brainer! Don’t know how the Seat Extended Warranty compares to Skodas though...

I want to sell my Good Lady's 2013 vRS with less than 36k on it.However despite all of this I still want one, currently looking for the right VRS. CTHE engine does have a thirst for oil - about 600 miles per pint over the last year.
However, she cannot see anything else that is as good for her needs for less than £20k so she's keeping it!
The N18 engined R56 Cooper S can be had for £8k....

I was going to suggest an S1 but momentarily forgot they were so expensive lol
And not automatic...That's the one new thing I've learnt today.
I think many come with the option but not all of them.

Thank you for the suggestions, it seemed sensible as some said to up the car size and up the choice and also the budget and i now have a Seat Leon Cupra R DSG with the 276 bhp engine. It's a bit leggy but has a pretty decent turn of speed for a standard tune 2 litre 4 cylinder.
Great choice, enjoy it
