Afternoon everyone, my brother is coming back from the Falklands in a month and needs to get a car sorted.

Now he will also be looking at getting a mortgage (in just his name) so a car on finance will not be a good idea.

He has given me a £10k budget. It has to be diesel as he does 15k miles a year. It has to have a bit of room to transport his fire fighter gear.

Before he went he had the new shape Clio and just managed to cope with the room.

He likes SUVs, but also likes 'sporty' cars. He is not overly bothered about engine power, just looks really. He also has 3 years no claims so it can't be something expensive to insure.

But on the other hand he is happy to shed it for a couple of years due to the mortgage, which i think may be better. However, reliability is also a key factor with the mileage he does.

So far I've looked at a DS5, low mileage, plenty of extras etc. £10k. But he said it is too much of a family car.
Next an X1, m sport x drive, the older shape one. Doesn't like it and insurance seems to be expensive.

So please, PH people, I need some ideas for the shed end of things.

Thanks in advance

If he had the new shaped clio he may like the 1.5 Diesel Captur since he like SUVs and isn't too bothered abouot power. You can easily pick some second hand ones up for well within his budget. They look good and since he had the Clio he should like the styling

There are 381 returns on auto trader for this! that is Capturs under 40,000 miles, diesel engines for under 10k. It's set to nationwide so if you move back to search results you can change my postcode for yours then see whats close by

Kia Pro C'eed SE Tech with 3 years Manufacturers Warranty left on it so a lot of peace of mind while he adjusts to his mortgage.

Or the C'eed 4Tech Hatch or Estate with 4 years of Warranty left:

Both look smart, they're comfortable come loaded with kit (which is what you want when doing 15k a year) & are as good as anything else out there but have the added peace of mind of not having to worry about anything, also I think the estate might be what he needs as he'll probably be decorating.

The other option is to buy a repmobile they'll have all the space he'll ever need & are built to put the miles on, it also means you can lower the budget & still get your brother a good car or use the budget & land a very good set of wheels with sensible running costs.

2.0/2.2d Mondeo Titanium X Sport Hatch/Estate

Kia Optima 3 1-2 years Warranty left but the Mondeo is the better car.

The value for money option is the Insignia (tell your brother to make sure he has a flush put through every other oil change) they're a good car but due to their name they lose a lot early on, which means you can bag a newish low mileage bargain.

Elite with Nav Hatch/Estate

SUV wise I'd say go for a Ford Kuga they're a very good option but the cars I've listed above are IMO better options than an SUV considering your brothers budget & needs.

Kuga Titanium X

Or the Kia Sportage (these are a bit underpowered in 1.7 form) 3/KX-3

A shed is an option but if he's going to be doing 15k a year reliability & the cost of time off the road have to be factored in too.

a bit over my budget when i bought 2 months ago.

I went with a 2014 Civic 1.6 i-dtec with 40k miles and FSH
84 g/km so free tax
Trips says i average about 69mpg or on a run this goes over 70
Camchain - no belts to deal with
only 118bhp but its very torquey, so much so i've not felt the need to turn eco mode off.

Comfortable
Flexible seating in the back and a big boot.
Looks a bit different to the other boxes out there.
Drives nicely, steering is a bit light but its is just a family hatch really.

When i looked at shed money round me, everything i found interesting was shagged when i got to look at it.
also considered...

Octavia but just a bit dull
Mazda 3 - bigger engine but not as cheap to run but better infotainment system
i40- bit cheap inside and the 1.7 isnt the most economical
Kia Optima, on my budget these were all approaching the 100k mile warranty end and the 1.7crdi real world isnt particularly economical

2 months in, happy with my choice.

andburg thanks for that, not considered one of those either, to be honest I'd have thought they would be over budget but there are some good examples on auto trader in budget
