GOLF GTD OR GTI

Hi all,

I have a little one on the way so sadly had to sell my beloved 428i (running 320bhp averaged 24mpg on a good day) and i am now after something a little more practical,economical but still with abit of oomph - Hence the reason i have stumbled across the Mk 7 Golf GTI/GTD.

My daily commute will only be around 20 miles in total - 60% extra urban and 40% urban . Just looking for some advice on whether to go with my head (Golf GTD) or my heart (Golf GTI)

All in all i roughly do around 10k miles a year.

Any advice would be much appreciated?

Don't see why GTD needs to even be an option, your MPG on a 20 mile commute in a GTI will be fine!

I do around 10k a year when you include driving around the place and what not. I’m just wondering what mpg figures i would see in the real world for both?

Always amazes me how quick the GTD is, followed a mate in his 170, my TT which is meant to be 240 bhp didn’t seem any faster, would need a good dual carriageway to pull any distance.

Get a Mk 7 and remap it, they pretty rapid then.

Why drive a diesel when you can enjoy a petrol version.

You've not doing enough miles to warrant using diesel and you want the GTI.

Heart is right and it makes more sense so head can relax.

I'm with you on this one, over 10k a year there will be bugger all difference in fuel spend, I wouldn't buy a diesel with that usage profile ... also I take it you're leasing as if not I definitely wouldn't go diesel as they are potentially about to get hammered on residuals ....

Factoring in the probability of VED & Diesel fuel hikes, potential DPF issues due to your mileage, Local authority charging more for parking a Diesel plus any other scam they can dream up to get people away from Diesel cars.

Not leasing no. Looking at paying cash - i’m just sick of cars that are so bad on fuel but don’t want anything slow so i’m trying to get the best of both worlds. Will i see above 30mpg in the GTI?

I had a GTD on lease over two years previously.I would see 38-40mpg driving hard and 50+ on a run.If your total mileage is 10k over twelve months then I would go for the GTI as the economy figures will be negligible and it is a petrol of course.

Couple of things to note the boot on these is pretty small so if you're moving buggies etc. around make sure it's adequate for you.They also have the radar sensor in the grill that emergency brakes for you if you get too close to the car in front,this can come as a shock if you're not ready for it.

Both good cars though but I would go GTI.

I did 18k a year in mine, averaged about 40mpg, it's great!

What year gti? The newer mk7 are pretty good on fuel. The mk5, less so. I average about 23mpg in my mk5 but it gets used properly.

I had a DSG GTD 170.

It was so BORING!

Only kept it a year.

Get a GTI.

Yup, get the GTi for sure. The GTD does 90% of what the GTi does but when you are pushing on in the GTD and it runs out of puff at 5000 rpm (or whatever) in each gear you will regret not getting the GTi.
