So I've just started a job with an 80 mile round trip on the dual carriageway each day, I'm looking to spend around £3k on something I can slam a load of miles and will be as comfortable as possible. Ideally a diesel with cruise control and aux connectivity, any suggestions?

I’m in a similar position and purchased a high miles merc c class 220cdi auto.

30k miles in and it’s proving to be a dependable beast of burden.

35-40mpg with a fair bit of stop / start m25 rush hour ever day.
Also I tend to make progress, so I don’t particularly drive for economy.

But my dad borrowed it for a week, got 50mpg over a tank.

assuming you havent got a big maintenance budget id shoot for the lowest mileage, well maintained mondeo/vectra/octavia you can find. volvos and mercs are nice but parts and repairs will be more expensive.

V70 D5. I have a similar commute and mine averages around 50mpg (although the OBC indicates over 60!)

Go for a 270 if you can find a good low mileage one, depending on your commute 35-40mpg should be a breeze & if you remap it mid forties will be achievable. Unless you need the four doors I'd go for the CLK.

The drivetrain is pretty much bulletproof the gearbox needs fluid & filter changes every 40k if there's no evidence of this being done budget £200 to get this done.

The 220 is a good option but the extra torque & power from the 270 make it the one to choose I sold mine with 170k on the clock, the only things that failed was an Injector & alternator.

On long runs I'd average 48's but mid 40's for shorter runs A/B roads.
