Criteria are it must be 4x4 (my comment - or look like it) and be capable of towing a 700kg race car on an open trailer. Suitable for a daily commute of 2*10 miles on a fast a road (assume this would be ok for a dpf).

More than 30 mpg if at all possible (not when towing, obviously). No automatics, and reliable. And definitely no pick ups! The Mrs wants something high up, so that rules out estates, but not medium size suv’s...

Two price points, 10 or 20 (so I know this is secondhand world)

Sorry for terse question, it’s late and the cat has just bitten me... Basically all I want is something capable of towing my race car, occasionally and getting me to work. I’m not fussed about dynamics. I’d go for an oldish vw transporter/camper if they weren’t so bloody expensive.

Why spend so much for an occasional
Tow car?
lots of things can easily tow a 700 kg race car on a sensible sized 4 wheel trailer.
Allow £300 yr tax andjist leave it parked up until you need to use it for a tow/go to tip/occasional use.

Vauxhall Omega estate (£500-£2000)
Bmw 3 series estate £1,000 - £30,000)
Volvo v70 £750- £20,000
Merc or 5 series estate - £750-£50,000
4x4 truck £500-£50.000.
