Needing a car today, what do you think of this Volvo?

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volvo/volvo-s80-2.4-140b...

Needed for commuting duties on the M1 for circa 500 miles a week. Having sold the E46 325i I had, nothing else seems to fit the bill with the level of comfort I'm after.

Need to purchase today as it's needed for tomorrow.

Any advice on these cars would be greatly appreciated too.

I would imagine comfy but a stinker in terms of MPG.

Agree with previous poster. Right car wrong engine. Look for a diesel for that ’mileage. I had that engine in a v70 and it was thirsty

Go for a good long test drive. Ad says gearbox is fine, but that box isn’t known for being particularly good if not maintained. (Check history too). After 20 minutes or so, when things are upto temperature, accelerate hard in 2nd, then ease off, does it slip into 3rd, or thunk? Do similar, but without hard acceleration. Do the revs flare on the change? Both are signs to avoid (it can be fixed of course, but costs money on what is a ‘cheap’ car).

In general, everything should feel solid, no rattles. Check handbrake travel, if it’s high, this could give you issues where the hubs need replacing / h-brake shoes fail & lock the hub. Again, check history - could be 50k old & ok, but at top of travel.

The engine will feel flat above 3k rpm compared to the 170 version - it’s electronically limited, which can be dealt with if you buy it. (mechanically identical engine, so no worries - the g/b final drive is longer, being pedantic, but meh).

Check front suspension, lots of bushes get eaten on a regular basis. It shouldn’t be clunky.

Try turning/parking, the transverse engine means steering lock is woeful - you do get used to it, but it’s noticeable when you’re getting used to the car.

A good one is a nice way to waft away the miles. They can cruise very nicely indeed.

Oh, and I’d tell them to jog-on over the ‘admin’ fee. That sort of thing really grips my st.
