2007 r8 or 2016 b8 Mustang?
Discussion
Hi guys
After a bit of advice from owners and fellow petrol heads.
Just bought a 2010 tt tfsi and I must admit I like it but it’s not enough for me by a long shot!
I really want a v8 and love the r8 and the Mustang but can’t decide between the two!
I have 35k ish and have narrowed it down to the above ( an f type would be in there but I 100 percent want a manual)
I know they are very different but a well kept r8 at 37k ish or a 2 year old Mustang at 28k seems like a bargain! I only do about 100 miles a week, have no kids just a tiny girlfriend and a pug so practically isn’t an issue and nor is fuel but reliability is high on the list! What do you guys think?

35k is bottom of the R8 market, a lot have fallen into the hands of enthusiasts but many more are now ragged round town centres after dark and have some sketchy history, you need to buy very carefully at that price point with a specialist car like an R8, they seem to attract dodginess as they get older.
A New Mustang for a quiet (but not that quiet) life.

You are at the bottom of the price range for an R8, if this isn't a concern and you don't mind possibly having to pay out on a few bits to put right then crack on.
I always feel the mustangs a bit of a desperate attempt at having a fast car. I drive a ford as my daily as well. I just don't like them.
What about a nice e90 M3, you'd get a nice competition edition plus change.

I thought about the m3s but they have never really floated my boat. The Mustangs have held their value well and are just falling now so I think In a few months and the arrival of the new one will get a nice discount!
I know what you are saying about the r8 and being in the wrong hands, I’ve stuck mainly with Audi’s as locally there is a superb specialist that has looked after mine and all my family’s ones and it really attracts me to staying with Audi. I like the tt rs but they don’t look enough for what they are and after having 6 TT’s I really like the mk3 tts that are around the 25k mark but I hate all the technology and digital screen they have...........blindly quick tho!
The r8 has the wow factor imo...........there’s loads about but could be big bills?
The running gear and v8 in the car are tried and tested and never heard any horror stories or maybe I’m not looking hard enough lol

Ok if the v8 M doesn't float yer boat stick with the R8. It'll be more of an occasion to drive and everyone will stand and admire it.
Just make sure the Its has had all the appropriate Audi inspections and that the mag ride isn't leaking. Corrosion can be a issue as well if it's been sat outside most of its life.
Ac compressor I thinks an engine out job as it's in front of the engine.
Asides from that there's not a lot goes wrong on them really.
Servicings pretty cheap, fixed Audi pricing.
Tyres and brakes will be expensive but not compared to other comparable marques.
Apparently they like all Audi v8 they can drink oil and as much as a litre / 1000 miles is considered normal
Clutches last on average 50-60k on a manual and are known to be needed replaced around 30k in the r-tronic.
R-Tronic is dreadful. S-Tronic on the v10's is good if it needs to be auto but for me I would want that beautiful gated manual in either the v8 or v10.
V8 manual and get a Larini Clubsport exhaust fitted.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 35k R8. It will be heading towards 80k miles I bet. The bills are big if you buy a dog. I looked at 40k R8s and some had been serviced at quick fit type centres for oil and stuff.
Clutch is engine out £3500 Or so at the very few specialists you'd trust.
Air con compressor fail is same
Mag ride shocks can be rebuilt now at 400 quid a corner plus fitting.
Tracker for insurance is 200 quid pa
Road tax 500 plus pa
Tyres are decent
pads 500 quid at dealers.
At the market bottom end you will find cars from people who can't afford to look after what was an £80k car.
Saying all that , a manual v8 R8 with all the toys and a proper exhaust that's mint is a thing of beauty and a great driving experience, albeit not lairy unsafe.
I'm missing mine already, sold within 2 weeks of advertisement.

I've been looking and considering a purchase for a while, looked at a couple but keep changing my mind, not made a move yet.
I've a family of 5 so keep thinking a selfish 2 seater wouldn't get hardly any use and then before I know it I'm back to looking at rs4 / m5.

Why did you move it on?

Purely because I've been after a step front Alfa for a long time and the right one came up so I bought it. I was intending keeping the R8 another year but a guy expressed interest and it sold immediately for very close to what I was going to advertise it at. There are many many R8 out there for sale so don't confuse a minter at a few grand more with less miles against one if the typical "smaller back street garages" who seem to delight in having an R8 as their flagship 2nd hand car.I've been looking and considering a purchase for a while, looked at a couple but keep changing my mind, not made a move yet.

One of the guys Pompey Reece on the R8 owners UK FB page is on here too and will tell you of 500 quid ppi spunked but saved him buying an R8 from a well known mainstream retailer which turned out to have numerous issues.
Thanks for all your input guys.......seems a well looked after r8 is by far the more popular choice! There’s 4 or 5 within a 50 mike radius of me so we are going to have a look at a couple.
One of my essential requirements is it goes to my Audi specialist for a full check over at my cost which I don’t think is unreasonable for a car like an r8?

Absolutely not, RE PERFORMANCE or Audi main dealer check is only safe option unless you are comfortable yourself and can afford perhaps £5k fund to cover any mishaps. One of my essential requirements is it goes to my Audi specialist for a full check over at my cost which I don’t think is unreasonable for a car like an r8?
Personally I don't think a mustang comes close. I'd be tempted and could have had one but it would have only been "to see" what they are like. Nowhere near as special and more of a one trick pony.
