Could someone reccomend one?, just small,cheap to run, tax and insure and reliable really, not fussed if petrol or diesel, I do approx 8 miles each way to work.
In the morning the traffic is clear but in the evening it can be a bit heavy, I’m looking at changing my main car to a Cayenne Turbo which is just going to be appaling on short stop start stuff so want a old commuter.
Was thinking Pug 206 HDI, Corsa, Fiesta, but with all the uncertainty with diesel at the moment maybe a small petrol would be a better bet?.
Ideally something which isn’t going to go wrong all the time, or just need usual small bits, bushes,tyres, brakes etc, not clutches, injectors, turbos etc.

At that price you want to be buying on condition above all else. Petrol and Japanese is the magic combo usually at this sort of price. Maybe you can get your hands on a Yaris or a Micra. Anything with 12 months MOT and a good service history will be a reasonable shout at this price. You can check the MOT history on the gov website. Four matching tyres is another indication the car has probably reasonably well looked after.

Do you just mean the mpg (in which case I agree)? I have an old Cayenne S and it's a very easy car to drive in stop start traffic - it's automatic and extremely comfortable.

Yes, just the MPG aspect really, it will get used a fair bit more at weekends, I know they’re a very nice car to drive in most environments, just 10-12 MPG on a daily basis seems a bit nasty!.

I have thought about cycling to work, it would be nice in the summer but not the most appealing thought in the winter, particularly as I have to leave home pretty early, plus I get a decent amount of exercise done in the gym already.

I've cycled to work all through winter. As long as you have the correct equipment it isn't an issue at all.

I cycle to work, a bit further than 8 miles, and completely understand that it's a great option when the weather is ok and we are on BST but in the winter months man it sucks!

I wanted a cheap and cheerful daily 4 years ago, and found a Mazda 323F for less than £700 with just 61K miles and 3 former keepers. You'd probably find one for less now.

It was a 1,500 cc model so being prior to 2001 it was in the cheap road tax bracket (£135 a year at the time) and being a non-interference engine no need to worry about the cam-belt - unless it broke!

It was fine, but I got bored with the lack of performance after 8 months and 3,000 miles! It averaged about 40 mpg so was reasonably economical too.
