Hey, looking to buy a project car but just can't decide after making a list of 20+ cars. I'm drawn to classics like the mini, 944 and 325i but due to outdated tech like only having 2 valves per cylinder, part costs and other things it would end up costing me a lot to modernize (e.g. 16valve-per-cylinder heads and better gearbox would cost more than the car) before I'd able to start properly adding power to the engine.

Could I get some ideas of potential project cars please? Ideally looking for anything that's light, isn't too expensive for the car + replacement parts and 4 valves per cylinder due to the better flow with a turbo. Bonus points for pre 200 cars angel

At this point my only guess would be to get a VW Golf mk/mk2, or a Pugeot 106/306 due to them having a DHOC setup? I thought about a honda civic, but the aesthetics of the car are very much lacking, personally.

Anyways, thanks for any ideas smile

I would think a 325i has 4 valves per cylinder too.

Would love the 944 but the models without the AWFUL front bumper are £7500+ and due to the rarity of parts, something simple like a boot latch is £75+, a front bumper is £980 and not to mention the £3500 in insurance per year. I wouldn't be able to afford it just for the insurance alone I'm afraid frown

Also, should have cleared up that I meant the gen 2 3 series e30 325i sorry. The M20 and M30 motors that came in them were both only 2 valve per cylinder which is a bummer frown

If you can't afford to insure a standard 944 ,how are you going to pay for a highly modified car ?

Only just finished college but been saving up, so I've got about £6000 to play with at the moment but due to low pay from an apprenticeship and needing to save for a house deposit I need to keep expenses low. At least when spending money on parts, I could sell them on at a later date, but with insurance it just seems like an unnecessary expense (Just checked, ~£5000 now for a 944 NA). I do plan on something more costly like a 944 in the future though, when I have disposable income and more no-claims discount.

I'm only planning to hand-port the heads, add a second-hand turbo and some safety modifications like suspension and brakes though, nothing highly modified, just a daily driver that's a bit more fun.
