After owning my Clio 182 for 4 years now I’ve decided it’s time to try something different - my only requirement is that is has character, is petrol and a manual.

What would you go for with 6 cylinders and £4K to spend?

Where have you found R32’s for £4K? I’m struggling to find them below 5...

350Z? Won’t be the best example though.

Boxster 986 has caught my attention! Are they as great to drive as the new ones? Can’t say I’ve really heard anything about the 986

You can’t really get anything tidy for 4 grand that matches your criteria.

Can't beat a V8 & with the change you can add some choice (X Pipe/springs etc) upgrades.

Wow that’s great value. Not sure I could stomach the bills if something went wrong though! Great suggestion though

What bills they don't go wrong? If you can't find any receipts expect to pay £200 to get this done the big service is the spark plug change because their are 16 of them.

Apart from that there's nothing that would go wrong with these (like an alternator etc) that couldn't go wrong with any other car.

Could be worth a look. The wheels limit the character somewhat.

True, those Mercedes just always seem like they would be expensive to repair if the electronics played up - I think I need to alter my perception

In regards to the 350Z I don’t think they’ve ever really struck a chord with me, I think I’m going to try and find some extra cash and drive a 130i and Boxster soon. Unless of course anyone has any other suggestions?

For 4k most performance cars will probably be ropey and leggy.

You could most definitely find a tidy 325ti for under 4 grand. Whether you find one in a reasonable time frame is another story however.
