Wanted to know peoples thoughts on this.
When I was looking for a car to buy I saw plenty of ads where it states that the seller will not sell to a dealer and will only sell to a fellow enthusiast or a 'good' home whatever that means!
Realistically if I was selling a car and a person turned up at my door step and offered me the right money then I don't think I would care if it is a Dealer, a non-enthusiast or anyone else as long as the money is real and they aren't trying to pull off some scam.
Do people really turn away someone that doesn't fit the description they want even if they are willing to hand over the correct sum for the car in question?

I think the consideration here is one of what value you place on things. Money is a commodity that we regularly place value on (we have no choice) but the person selling may in fact place a greater value on knowing that the car will be well looked after and enjoyed.
If money was no object I would rather sell a car to someone who I know will derive the same levels of enjoyment from it as I do/did. All IMHO of course.

I wonder if this is more to deter the 'we've got buyers for your car brigade' rather than actual buyers. I don't know what it's like now but when I last sold a car privately I seem to remember a lot of these companies getting in touch who'd definitely, probably, maybe shift your car for a small upfront fee. I'm off to the local Mini Dealer after work to sell them my 2010 R56, which they've offered to buy for almost my asking price. I still think its a bit odd they want to buy my car to be honest but their cash is as good as anyones.

As above, they are looking for something closer to the Private Sale figure - a Trader is unlikely to offer that amount as they need to make a profit on resale. However there is nothing wrong with approaching a Buyer and saying what you have outlined above i.e. "I am a Trader but I really want your car and would offer X for it."BlackR8 said:

That's exactly what they're trying to say in the ad. They're willing to wait until someone turns up willing to pay what they want. The "no traders/dealers" bit is to say they dont want to take what a trader will offer specifically.
I advertised a car for sale a couple of years ago. The only interest shown was by a Toyota franchise in Scotland.
They offered to send a transporter, and assuming my car was as described they'd transfer the money and collect there and then. I'd've been happy to sell to them, but my circumstances changed and I couldn't sell immediately.

When I bought my last rx8 the guy I bought it off in Sheffield full on quizzed me on the car, it’s running, maintenance, daily usage and how I was going to look after it - he wanted it to be cherished even though in fairness he hadn’t by “enthusiast” standards.
I passed and bought it - when I sold it on (as with any car I’ve sold), highest bidder gets it - their money their car

Having spent over a decade involved in the Ford / RS scene most of the time i see statements about no traders / enthusiasts only is because those sellers really want the car to end up with someone who is going to enjoy it / take it to shows, look after the car, etc. I know a couple of owners who have held onto cars before selling privately a year or more later purely because they didn't want the car to end up in the hands of a bedroom trader looking for a massive profit due to the "classic" status.I can understand why people do it - i have seen a number of decent RS over the years end up with a trader / bedroom trader / owner who is purely in it for a massive profit and the last owner was rather gutted to see it sat somewhere and not being used / taken to shows. If the owner is massively into their cars then i can see why they want to find another decent owner for the car.
On the other side, i can also see that if you're not personally attached to the car then i can appreciate why you'd just want rid at the asking price and not worry about where it ends up.
