Looking at potentially going over to the States for 2-3 months after I finish my contract, I'm obviously not expecting it to be cheap by any means, I have no issue with the cost of it all, but rather the bang for your buck. Its gonna be £2.5-£3k for a rental Yaris over the 2-3 months (including underage surcharge). This isn't a thread along the lines of "I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks, I saw a TG special that says I could buy a car instead of renting one, can I?" more of a genuine question as to whether for a quarter of the year and £3k I could/should buy a car, run it for the 3 months and then sell it for any price to be rid of it? I understand there's all sorts of stuff with the DMV you have to do to get a car out there (which I'd love to have explained to me btw). Not so interested in what car it is (Though I am drawn to the one below). A side note, how possible would it be to rent somewhere out there E.G an flat for the 3 months as a none citizen? Cheers

I’ll start with your last question first. Renting a flat for 3 months will attract the tourism tax (if whatever state you’re in charges it) as it not usually considered a residential agreement unless it is longer than 6 months. Thats not a problem, and it’s easy enough to get around...if you can find a property owner to deal with direct. I’d recommend trying CraigsList for whatever area you are headed to.

With regards to the car, you need to provide more info really as to your expected county and state (and possibly city).

In my state (FL), you can own a car and register it without a local driving license, but I don’t know where you’re going! Same with insurance.

One thing I would say is that second hand cars here are generally more expensive than back in the UK on a like for like basis - they seem to retain more of their value.

Good luck!

ETA: Florida is a good state to look for cars - often find second home vehicles!

Couldn’t ask for a better reply, it’s Florida I’ll be in. Around Tampa, possibly Jacksonville or even around Orlando. Thanks for giving so much detail smile

Tampa is about 3 hours from me.

The biggest thing to watch out is the use tax in Florida. When you go to change the registration of the car you have to effectively pay sales tax on the purchase price. This does rely on 2 things though. First that you declare the value correctly (you have to write the value you paid, however people have been known to write a lower number to pay less tax). Second is that you actually register it in your name - a lot of people seem not to bother, and I’ve seen it for short periods where they try to persuade the owner to lend them the plate and leave them on the car (along with the tax).
