Delivering New Car & Collecting PX
Discussion
PH guru's. I have never done a car deal this way before so does this sound legit?
I'm buying an 18 plate pre-reg car of a main dealer up country. All dealing has been over the phone/emails.
I have agreed a great price including the dealer delivering my new car to my home address and collecting my old PX.
I assumed this would be by a flatbed or trailer but no they apparently I have to tax the new car and they use some old duffers (their words) to drive my new car to me and drive my PX away.
I was wondering how this works as when I sign the 'sold to trader' part of the V5 surely the car isn't taxed and would need to be covered some other way?
However the dealer is asking me to hand over the entire V5 and they will send it off when the PX gets to them.
I'm also not sure where I stand if anything happens to my new car or PX in the hands of the duffer? damage, fines etc?
Is this the way its done sometimes because it all sounds a bit shady to me especially as its a main dealer franchise

The driver will have trade plates so can drive away untaxed.
But do NOT hand over the whole V5 to the dealer, that's not correct.
It's the sellers responsibility to inform DVLA it's been sold, or sold to a dealer.
If you get parking tickets through, or worse, DVLA will rightly inform you that you should have sent in the yellow slip.
If selling to a dealer fill out the yellow section.
No exceptions to this.
Ask the main dealer why they don't want you filling out the yellow bit, I'd like to know what they say.

I'm sure this has been done many times.
Why didn't you buy from local dealer?
As a pre-reg car the price was really good and the same at all dealers in the group so there was little room to move on asking price. Why didn't you buy from local dealer?
It was all about the price to change for us and a straight cash no finance buy which I know isn't always a favourite.
Believe me I am not one of the 'my PX is worth £££' brigade and I had the lowest WBAC figure px price in my head as a starting point but the local branch tried to screw us down even more than that so emailed the other dealers and struck a better deal.

I've not met a car dealer yet who hasn't got trade plates.
It's not right Zooks, keep the yellow bit and send it off, or you can do it online nowadays.
Yes i think you are right its best I send it off. No idea how I get it signed though. I believe its 3rd party their using to deliver it.It's not right Zooks, keep the yellow bit and send it off, or you can do it online nowadays.

You can do it online, no signatures required. If a third party is fetching/delivering cars they'll have trade plates, you can't do the job without them.
And if the dealer says they haven't I'd be very surprised/worried.
If they haven't got plates, have they got insurance?
Keep the sold to motor dealer section, get the collection driver to sign it, put the supplying dealers details down. Give him the remainder of the V5, don't post the yellow section. The following day go online, go to DVLA sold my car, follow the instructions, put date of transfer as the day it was collected. That way when its collected it shows as taxed when he takes it and then shows the date of transfer as the correct day if anything happens.

Is it taxed now?
You can't tax it without insurance. If it is already taxed, what will you do about your existing insurance.
I wouldn't want some old bloke or anyone else going for a long drive on my insurance.
You have been able to tax without insurance for about 4/5 years now.You can't tax it without insurance. If it is already taxed, what will you do about your existing insurance.

To update the thread this is what we did except for telling DVLA we had sold the car today not tomorrow. The driver had no trade plates with him and we had already moved our insurance to the new car so don't how that works for driving it back but that's not really my problem.

I brought a £6k Cupra R from Sunderland EVans Halshaw and I lived in the Midlands, they told me a PX price and I signed paperwork online and they delivered it and collected it a few days later, never stepped in the dealers. Hassle free for me
Have to admit apart from my query on delivery this has been the easiest car purchase ever. A couple of emails and phone calls to/from the dealer, car delivered to the door when they said it would be and old one removed. No hassle and none of the usual dealer bulls

Its the easy way and helps everyone, so i take it you updated it online they day after they collected the car but put the actual date of collection down - which is kind of what i mean't The driver had no trade plates with him and we had already moved our insurance to the new car so don't how that works for driving it back but that's not really my problem.

Insurance has nothing to do with it, like you say that's there problem not yours.
Enjoy your new car.

Er no not exactly. I told the dvla I sold it online as soon as the driver got to the bottom of our road
That way have a time stamped email from the dvla to prove it no longer belongs to use in case it picked up any speeding tickets or fines etc
Still not sure why a main dealer would use someone without any trade plates?

Ah ok, it wouldn't have made any difference even if you did it next day, the date of collection would have been the same, the same as if you had posted the trader section to the DVLA.
My reasoning for doing so was if I got a confirmation email from dvla sent at 2.30pm and a speed camera was tripped at 3.00pm I would have some proof it wasn't me driving. Does it not work this way?
