Ok, well not strictly 'anything' as I do have some requirements.

I'm looking to buy a new house and to free up some money I'm considering getting shot of my mk7 Golf.

I'll need a car to get me to and from work, about 15 miles per day but also occasionally need to visit customers for meetings.

I'd ideally like something with cruise control having grown accustomed to it in both of my current cars. It also can't embarrass me when I visit customers but other than that I've not got many rules. Oh and It needs to be about a VW Golf size. I won't consider a Vauxhall, they're ste.

Currently on my maybe list are:
  • Citroen C4 VTR
  • Golf mk4 GTI
  • Golf mk5 non-GTI
  • Ford Focus
Budget is £1K, so what would you recommend?

Some good suggestions thus far, the Skoda being something I'd not considered so I shall put it on the list.

Yeah, I don't think it would be beyond the realms of possibility?

Granted I'm not living in the UK so could be wide of the mark, but surely not by much?

In 2016 I bought a 2004 GT with long test and 9 months tax for €1,600.

No this was the time when they were tied up with GM so didn't have wiring looms that would disintegrate at the first sign of moisture, they're actually quite robust.
