Hello,

I am currently 19 and I will be working at Jaguar Land Rover for a year working as a Software Engineer. I am currently looking for my first car within a 5k budget excluding insurance that will firstly be something rather unique and enjoyable and secondly be something that will keep its value in a few years time so I can trade it on. Do you have any recommendations or ideas that would be good to look into? Note I am also a rather tall and larger guy so anything like a tiny mini is out of question!

Thank you
James Holliday

First cars have a high probability of getting damaged in various ways. I recommend getting something cheap and expendable for your first car, and something more interesting for the second or third once you've learnt a few lessons with the first.

Haha I wish but I lack the mechanical experience to get such a car!

Yeah I understand where you are coming from. I don't mind going for something cheaper but I would just like to get something that is different and unique compared to your typical first driver car.

Panda 100HP - not unique but fun, economical and probably insurable

Good shout.

Has been very well received by the motoring press over the years and shouldn't lose much value. Probably cheap to insure for a younger driver too.

Alfa Romeo 147

Leaves you with a couple of grand to fix faults and some kudos amongst the petrol heads.

Had a look but the insurance is pretty hefty

Wait until you start work - they will be giving them away for next to nothing to employees. Where do you think all the 12-18 month old cars come from?

Mercedes 190 in a funky colour combination. I like mine, cheap to insure for me as well, and not going down in value if kept nice.

If you are working for JLR then as mentioned above, a series 2 Landy is obvious.

Or a Volvo V70? Doesn't depreciate much and has loads of toys.

in all seriousness, there is probably a strong chance that if you are running something “interesting” for 5k and using it as a daily that it may throw up some bills that you wont have the spare cash to deal with, especially as you will need to get it fixed asap as you will be relying on it to get to work. it could become a major pita. conversely, if you are living close enough to bike or bus it and are prepared to do your own maintenance id say go for it.

I do actually really like a series 2 Landover but I will have to do a fair bit of long distance motorway driving and feel like it would be difficult in one. I also actually really like a Volvo v70

Hows working for JLR? I was offered a body engineering role last year but had to unfortunately turn it down due to personal circumstances at the time.
