I've been thinking for a while, it might be fun to buy something relatively unasuming, for not a lot of money, that I could turn into a fun tatty looking sleeper.

Not overly fussed if it goes bang, but was wondering, what is the best route to take.

I was thinking of something from the VAG 1.8T house.

Say an old 2001 A3T, or MK 1 TT bought for £800. Then spend 1200 on a reconditioned turbo, bigger intercooler and remap.

Is there a better option? The child in me quite likes the idea of a "hairdessers" car being able to leap off at a million miles an hour, upsetting a few people.

Forget handling and longevity.

Saab?

Not many (if any) will actually be upset.

It’ll be someone else’s modded / project car.

Might only get from 0-100 once though hehe

Cheap. Reliable. Fast.
You can pick two, as the old saying goes.

If a standard car, then some sort of end jap turbo / V12 German barge maybe.

There was a thread on here (probably in reader's cars) where someone had a tatty looking Focus LX TDCi, then bought a crashed ST and transplanted the mechanicals. That might fit with what you want.

EDIT - fix spelling error.

Unless you do it outside McDonalds.

Saab 9-5 Aero with whatever is left from the purchase price spent on a good service and turning the wick up a bit.

Merc barge with a 5 litre engine will be up there, something left field like a Chrysler Crossfire maybe.

Something with a 2.7t engine, S4 or A6 should mod easy. 0-100 15 seconds standard.

But modern cars are faster a standard A6 3.0 TDI Quattro will match it.

A6 with the 2.7TT, although 2k is the very bottom of that market.

Saab Aero plus a 3" downpipe, Bosch fuel pressure regulator and a Noobtune stage 3 ECU remap will get you 300hp and 440Nm (325 lb ft) torque

Thinking leftfield maybe a smart bike engine conversation if you can do it on the cheap.

Just buy a FireBlade or GSX-R 1000.
Wasting your time trying to make a car accelerate as fast as either one of those two, even more so for £2k.

With that engine and that budget I doubt you'd see off many new hot hatches. Same for a 300 bhp Saab. You wont have a hope against anything proper sporty.

For those referencing bikes, I already have a GSXR, and people expect it to be quick off the mark.

I was thinking of something subtle, understated and fun.

It would seem it's not really worth it.

Might be fun seeing how much boost could be extracted from a 225TT or HOT Saab before it will go bang though.

Switchable map that gives you access to all manner of beans for a few seconds at a time.

I also have an old TVR Chimaera, someone mentioned the other day that you coudl buy turbo kits for them for about £2500. Perhaps I should focus on that instead.
