Just starting an NHS Lease on a 330e, obviously servicing, tyres and insurance are included.

However, I've heard there are regs around continuous insurance etc, and that I may lose out on keeping all or some of my no claims bonus (currently 9 years).

How long can I be without insurance?

Any advice appreciated.

I do have another car, which my wife uses. It's currently insured in her name, but insurance expires in September. Wondering if, when her policy ends, whether I should insure it in my name, so at least I have insurance? Hmmmm

2 years is the rule IIRC but most insurance companies will take history of driving lease/company vehicles into account.

So if, in September, I took out a policy to insure my wife and I on our other car, that would be ok? Then, the next year, it can be in her name etc. So the longest either of us goes without insurance is 1yr?

I'd guess this may cause potential issues (or hassle as we know what insurance companies are like) in the event of a claim around who the main driver is and why was the policy in another person's name.

I have just come out of my company car scheme and declared the no claims that I had wrapped up during my time running the company car.

Insurance companies just wanted a letter stating that I had had the car for my sole use etc etc and they all seemed happy to honour the no claims.

The insurance websites now have an option when stating the source of no claims to put in company car.

My wife has just come out of the NHS car leasing scheme after 9 years. As previously stated your NCD usually only last for two years if you don't have a policy.

She effectively lost any NCD she had prior to joining the lease scheme. However the Dept who deal with the leasing provided her with a cover letter confirming the number of claim free years she had during her leasing period, which her new Insurance company took into account when calculating her premium.

I ditched my NHS lease car in December and did petsonal PCH.

AXA accepted all 3 years I had acquired on NHS scheme. Ironically Aviva who were the underwriters for the NHS lease policy wouldn't accept it though.

Hmmm, thanks for all the input. Good to know there are some insurers will accept the claim-free years with the NHS scheme.

Regarding insuring the other car in my name, I’m sure I can have the insurance in my name, but have my wife as the main driver? No?

I’ve always been RK and policyholder on wife’s car with her as main driver. However changed it to her as policyholder to give her the safety net of DOC cover.

We’re with LV= and they told us for a couple they didn’t care how it was done and cost would be same. Although when we did it it was slightly cheaper in her name.

LV also had no issues giving me 5yrs NCB when I came out of company car and had letter from our broker.

I did see a post the other day from someone who found the premium as a new policyholder was no different with or without NCB as once your beyond young driver stage insurers just replace NCB with an introductory discount.
