Currently looking to upgrade on my 10 plate petrol fiesta which can achieve anywhere between 43-48mpg. There's a whole host of things I'd like to fix on it but in all honesty it's more of a time to treat myself a bit.

Driving 15k a year (based in Manchester, covering mainly A roads) the head says diesel but the heart says petrol. Commute is at least 45 minutes each way so confident I wouldn't have DPF issues.

Details:
- willing to spend up to £22k (will most likely go bank loan route)
- similar MPG would be nice, improved even better
- car must be sporty, prefer hatchbacks, some saloons are nice
- 0-60 in under 8s
- android auto compatible
- heated seats

I have considered the following:
- 3 series (petrol or diesel), but they don't do android auto very frustratingly
- V40 r design
- Leon FR Tech
- Golf GTI/D

Out of the above I prefer the GTI but assuming 35 MPG it starts adding up a lot to run over the year. Suggestions are welcome!

I was doing 18k in a Mk7 GTI, filled it up maybe 3 times a month?

15k p.a I'd probably go for the GTi especially with the recent hate for diesels.

Thanks both, I feel like the £ loss in MPG is likely to be offset by higher petrol residuals and not having to worry about DPF replacement.

Added bonus of not driving a tractor.

I think out of that list for me I would be tempted for the V40 D4.
I'm still torn on the whole petrol/diesel debate but you won't have any issues with your commute as you say and if the price of oil keeps rising it wouldn't suprise me if all of a sudden diesel is back in favour.

All good suggestions but a bit worried that the Kia is too slow!

I can easily use public transport to get to work so I'm still tempted b the GTI and just take a day or so a week slumming it, will bring my annual mileage down to ~11k which shouldn't hurt on the depreciation so much.

My main concern with a diesel purchase wouldn't be DPF issues with that sort of annual mileage, it would be resale.

How long do you normally run cars for, before you change?

But overall, I'd go GTI.

It probably won’t, but it sounds a lot like you don’t want to have a diesel so get the GTI, life is short and a few quid here and there is inconsequential.

You’ll be surprised on economy with the GTI. A lot of owners here report 40+ easily on a run. In fact, now it’s a bit warmer even my mk6 GTI manages 40 mpg on 45 mile commute. The mk7 will trump that by a margin given the latest revisions on the ea888 engine. Add ACC and the extra 7th gear in the 245 PP model, you’ll most probably match your current Fiesta. Obviously being a faster the car you’re likely to put your foot down time to time (stupid not to given the car!!) but you’ll still have respectable economy, certainly more than other “hot hatches”.

The only diesel I’d consider is a 330d/335d. 6 cyclinder so less of a tractor smile

That budget will see you into a B9 A4, which is a better car than the current 3 series save driving dynamics

I feel like I'd be cheating myself by only getting the 2.3! Mustang you would have to go all out!

Well a GTD would still be a significant improvement for me but I get concerns over the tractor factor and seeing GTI's on the road thinking what if.

If fuel economy & a decent drive are your priorities then the Focus ST-3/Golf GTD/Leon FR Titanium Tech:

These are great value at the moment.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201... enjoyment

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Now if it's driving enjoyment you want then it has to be the Megane RS plus you'll have the bonus of slow depreciation.

looking on AT at 2017 sub 10k cars the GTI commands a 3k premium over the GTD (cheapest ones, page 1).

15k a year at 40mpg £6 a gallon (GTI) = £2250
Same but for a diesel assuming 60mpg = £1500.

The diesel MIGHT depreciate more rapidly but you would need to factor in that the petrol car costs more to buy and you will spend thousands more in fuel over an ownership cycle, based on my assumptions here.

A GTD won't long term avarage 60 MPG just like the GTI won't long term average 40 MPG (allowing for some short journeys, some long journeys, rain, winter, winter fuel, etc). My guess is closer to 50MPG/35MPG long term based upon economy websites.

This plus factor in the fact Diesel is more expensive than Petrol and it's not that different (I run both by the way and neither manage 30MPG!)

Buy what you want - your posts suggests your heart is set on on a GTI so get it done
