What are the best sounding cars out there under around £20k? Could be something reasonably modern, or something old. Any thoughts?

I'm guessing early C63s are less than £20k now.

It’s pretty subjective...

without modifying the exhaust etc I'd go with a C63, if you can do exhaust mods then the normally aspirated V12 Mercs from the mid 2000's sound phenomenal or the Maserati V8 in the 4200/Gransport. The RS4 sounds great too

Nope - cross-plane V8s sound best. Why else do manufacturers add speakers to modern exhaust systems to try and emulate classic V8 sounds?
C63 a good shout, or a Monaro/vxr8

you could get a pre-facelift c63 for a lot less than £20k, and then spend the change on the usual cat deletes / miltek / whatever takes your fancy

Cheapest Monaro would be about £8k for the 5.7, so that's pretty good value for the sound.
I assume old yank stuff is off the list because PH? As an old Chev or Ford would get you in to the big cross plane V8 territory that inherently brings with it lovely noises.

Something a little more exotic sounding you'll be after an Alfa with the Busso V6. 156, 166, GTV, there'll be some properly bargainous options out there that with an exhaust on will leave you trembling at the knees.

Continuing the lower end, other personal favourites would be an early Impreza warble for the full McRae experience, also a Fiat Coupe 20V would be nice, Golf VR6s sound nice too.

Sort of depends what sort of 'best sounding' you want, as some people really like induction noise, some like an engine that screams, others the lumpy idle of a big cam in a V8...?

I like a cross plane V8 at idle / hauling from low revs. But when singing to the redline, I actually prefer a straight six.

So yes - subjective. smile

This. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of a V8 burbling away but a V10 at high revs cloud9
