New job (field based) - what car?
Discussion
Hi all
After 12 years of commuting by train I have landed a new job based in the South East covering the region in a sales role.
Historically I've gone from cheap PCH lease to cheap PCH lease with no worry on mileage.
I suspect I could do 20k a year. So my question is, what car now?
I have a preference to estates but that's not the be all and end all. I'm sat on a quote for a mildly specced V90 estate on 8k miles for approx £340p/m and the lease company want in the region of £450p/m if I up that to 20k miles.
Do PCH lose their shine on higher milesages? Or does the above price increase sound reasonable for an increase of 12k mi per year. Or am i better off looking at a prereg or low mileage, or getting a Lexus LS and be done with it!
Thanks

Have you searched: https://www.contracthireandleasing.com/
For your quote you'd need to know the deposit eg, 3+23, 6+23, 9+23.
For some OEM like VAG it's worth getting a low mileage quote with the excess amount. It may be cheaper than the higher mileage quote.
Personally I think PCH are better at higher mileage, since the more you drive the car the cheaper ppm it becomes.

My job is field based ( go to the office then onto jobs). I have covered 10k miles this year and I'm struggling to know what car to get.
All I know is get an auto and preferably an economical one.
I have looked at leasing but can't seem to get the numbers to work, I think buying a 2-3 yr old car with a loan / finance is the best way to get something new(ish) without the worry about mileage. I'll be investigating this more when my house purchase completes.

For that mileage I would go for a 2nd hand lowish mileage rep mobile such as this.
Sell after 3/4 years with 100k+ miles and repeat.

Agree with the other comments about buying a 2/3 year old car - running it for 2/3 years and then rinse / repeat. I think that would work out better financially in your situation.
The 5 series lease example given above works out at nearly £19k over three years.... and then you hand it back.

Thanks for the comments. I'm thinking of going down the purchase route after all after 6 years of leasing. A weird sensation.
Currently thinking Ford Mondeo Vignale or Skoda Superb in a posh spec, L&K. Big plus for both for me is Android Auto integration. I've got it on my current car and think it is bloomin' awesome compared to any other manufacturer infotainment software.

Pass probation or decide you really like the job then look at your options.
Fair point. However my lease is up anyway so I need a car as it is, and given I've had 2 estates before this it's not a million miles away. Extending the lease informally for 3 months is an option, mind you, so might be prudent.Argh, decisions.

Does £8-10k p/x sound reasonable?

It could be worth looking at 4WD options and also budget for a set of winter tyres on steelies - you don't want to be stranded in a FWD on summer tyres at the first sign of snow if you need to be getting to/from site/home.
Definitely. Although I'd rather pick the right car than let the cost of replacement wheels and tyres dictate, but certainly an inclusion on my Man Math-o-Matic 3000 spreadsheet.wemorgan said:

Previous model so will have taken a hit on residuals, although current model will be 8 years old by that point if it hasn't been replaced. Based on last few generations Mondeo they seem to exist for 7-8 years. It looks like £8k would be a good estimate.

I have a 210 & really can't fault it, it has a decent amount of power & the after sales service has been second to none, I will say the lighter interior really makes a difference as does the roof.Value I'd estimate to be between 9-11k there aren't a lot on the road compared to something like a 3 Series or C Class so they'll hold a decent bit of value in the same way the Titanium X Sport model does.

Depending on your budget the estates are hard to find.
