Best 'inbetween' cars you've ever had.
Discussion
Looking to see which cars you've had to fill gaps in between main car ownership.
6/12months of possible carless ownership could be upon me and after seeing a few mk1 TTs I think I've decided to go the opposite way and get a nippy shed of some sort until I find a new job after finishing my degree and then I can sort out a lease!
Twingo 133/suzukiignissport type is what I'm looking at now! Something that enjoyable but not necessarily quick!, (feel free to throw ideas) The TT had alot going on with even more that could go wrong!
What cars have you had that filled that space!????

I got a Fabia 1.2 Tsi Se for the missus whilst we waited for our Macan.
I was so impressed with it we got a top range estate one when the Macan went.
She now doesn't want anything else.
110 bhp 6 gears so slightly nippy
£20 road tax
55mpg
Smartlink for phone stuff
Auto emergency braking
Glass roof
And a very nice drive, happy to go anywhere in it. Reasonable size as well, I think they're about the same size as a mk3 Golf estate used to be.

Renault 21 Turbo proved to be a ball whilst I was having my Cossie upgraded I planned to keep it a few months (paid £2800 for it) I ended up keeping it 3 years it was a good car with one of the best passenger seats I've ever had (it reclined & passengers never managed more than 30 minutes before sleeping) in a car.
mine has to be a mg ztt 2.5v6 auto top spec I bought off gumtree got a one way train ticket to buy it I had already knocked it down from something like £1300 to £950 .
But when I arrived to collect it I didn't fancy it so I was faced with either getting a train home 120 miles or trying to get the price down more.
The chap had bought the mg as a stop gap while his car was being repaired so didn't need it anymore so I drove it away for £580 thinking will it get me home well it did and I had it for 1 year and vowed not to spend a penny on it and it kept going I was using it a work vehicle.
So come mot time I was expecting a couple of a4 sheets from the tester and all it failed on was a couple of rusty brake pipes which I managed to do myself via ebay kit .
brilliant car and I sold it for more than I paid for it minus the fuel bill

I'm currently running a 2005 Accord 2.4 tourer while I wait for the right import legacy to come up.
There are so many reasons not to like it. From the driving position never being quite right to the seat which moves a fraction of an inch when braking. The driving position is never quite right and sometimes it sees fit to have a bit of vibration at speed (but not always).
But the way it makes progress when you boot it almost makes up for that. It's not a fast car by any stretch but Honda have poured some witchcraft on that engine which makes it feel very much like my old 2.5 bmw but with more poke.
I wanted to universally despise the car but I genuinely don't mind getting in it most days.

About 7/8 years ago I bought an E38 BMW 735i off a friend for £1000 whilst in between cars. It was a lovely old thing and we ended up keeping it for over a year.
I did feel very guilty when I part exchanged it under the then scrapage scheme for £2000 - it really was a terrible thing to have done....

A battered mk3 Mondeo 1.8 LX with LPG that I bought for 400euro as a 1/2 month car that I could then throw away kinda thing.
I ended up keeping it for the longest I'd ever owned the same car, 18months and 45k miles it was faultless and always fun to drive. Sold it to a friend for 400. Great car

Bought a 2.0HDI Citroen Xsara Picasso from a guy round the corner when my wife killed her Grand Vitara. Previous owner was a mechanic who'd picked it up as an MOT failure off a customer and used as a stop gap car while he stuck a new engine in his own car. We expected it to last a few months while we looked for a new car for the wife. It lasted 2 years and did some long distance family holidays in it in absolute comfort. We all loved it and were actually sad to see it go eventually.
I also ran a hand me down Honda HRV along side a Z4 3.0 (needed for moving the kids about). I preferred driving the Honda and wish I kept it longer.
I've got a lease car going back at the end of the year and I've no plans to lease or buy something new. Stop gap cars are more fun.

Mercedes ML270cdi, I bought it as I had 10 weeks before my new car arrived from a guy on the Merc forums. It was at a price that I could trade it in and lose nothing.
I ended up keeping it for over 2 years, really, really loved it. We even bought a new BMW X3 and still kept it.
It was 12 years old and 100k miles, but it felt tight (for an ML) with no clunks etc. and it was so comfy and relaxing to drive.
