Hi all,

Maybe a strange one, maybe not; after a fast comfortable suv that can cope with poor roads and have sub 6 sec 0-60’ and heavy torque for a caravan.

Have a 2014 320d msport touring right now and don’t do heavy miles but bored of the lack of pace. Decided it is time to upgrade. Looked at RRS, X5, Q7 and not happy with any of them. Have narrowed it down to either a used Porsche Cayenne DS or a new XC90 XC60 T8. I realize they are in totally different class and it is a choice of performance vs toys.

What does PH think; any other options apart from Mercedes or Levant?

Budget?

And why were the usual suspects ruled out?

You ruled out the RRS but thats the baby one, not real fair compared to the larger suv's.

Try a 5.0 SC FFRR, completely different animal to a sport.

Yes, it’s a tiny bit bigger, has all the same tech and luxury but is a bit more “wallowy”. They’re both really good, but expensive.

I think we need to know why the RRS, X5 and Q7 were ruled out to know what the OP is looking for.

My Cayenne S is an ancient one (2003) but I love it and highly recommend them. There were practical reasons I bought it in 2013 and I expected to only own it for 6 months. I was pretty sure it would bore me to death. It doesn't.
It's far more fun than it should be - only downside is the 15mpg it averages.

Hi,

Had consumed a bit of falling over water so missed some critical details!

Budget - circa £50k minus my BMW.

BMW X5 ruled out as it was not different enough to my xdrive 320 and if I am spending such a large amount of £ it must feel special. 530D touring for the same reason. Audi ruled out as I am not a fan of the looks tbh - goes for all audis and Merc actually - sorry!

RRS Not fully ruled out yet as it does tick many of the boxes but seems out of budget for a 3-4 year old sub 30k miles with decent performance (must be quicker than the BMW 7-sec to 60 and torque is key here. Porsche in question would be the 4.2D S to give an idea of the benchmark, looks like I can get a ~2014 for my money with porsche approved warranty.

Also considered was LR Disco but not a fan of the looks and and Jag F-Pace seems to be dating quite quickly; the T8 engine proposition in the Volvo and toys/general level of comfort plus R-Design spec looks tempting but it is "just" a Volvo and not a Porsche.

It needs to be an SUV to pull the caravan but as my only car it needs to fill all boxes from dog/bikes/kids carrier through motorway run to airport to fun driving when the mood takes me. Also the roads in Ireland are atrocious and I am tired of replacing my run flat tyres due to bulges etc (not sure if this will be better in an SUV if specced with 21"-ers...but that is man maths for you). Happy to wait another year also for prices to come down as the BMW does everything well, it is just not special enough.

Also my car history is not that mainstream and like to be a bit different and RRS are quite common here.

Happy to look at others - feel free to suggest. Jeep is an interesting alternative that I hadn't thought of.

Im thinking previous gen but they were completely different cars, one was fantastic and one was for drug dealers.

Not the T8 but had a new XC60 D5 Inscription for a few awhile and it wasn't what Id hoped it to be.

It looked great, inside and out. Interior looked classy, superb stereo and headlights but strangely from what I understand about Volvo's I just couldn't get comfortable and it actually gave me back ache every time I drove it. Despite heated and ventilated seats that massaged etc

Ergonomics were off as far as im concerned. As I was uncomfortable Id try and adjust the seats bolstering/lumber and massage functions it was all done by pressing the relevent button on the seat bases then abjusting via the screen.. Means faffing around and whilst driving it isnt ideal

In terms of a sports UV, it falls down there too. Hard driving it bobs about on its suspension badly, a B road blast has it bobbing and fidgeting in corners and bouncing along the straights, bumpy roads admittadly but not nearly as composed as Id have expected. I wouldnt mind if it was comfortable as a pay off except it wasnt, it never settled nor soaked up the bumps.

Here's one with the worst of the depreciation gone & a whole heap of change to keep in the bank as well as that stonking V8 to listen to. smile

Now if it's torque you want what about a 6.0 V12 with 700nm of it, you'll have to hunt for one though:
