High miles vs high number of owners.
Discussion
Evening everyone.
I am sure this subject has been discussed before, but how do you feel about a high number of owners versus high mileage on a used car?
I am looking at two 2006 Jaguar XK’s. One has just over 100,000 miles and 11 owners, the last two for a very short time. The other has 150,00 miles but has been owned by the same guy for 10 years, and he has put 100,000 of those miles on the car.
I had a chat with a family member, who is actually a former Jaguar engineer of 30 odd years, and he has rather steered me away from both cars, but I am just not sure what to do…

I’d take the lower miler if you can subject the car to a very thorough expert inspection and lengthy test drive.
Is low mileage a big deal on the XK then? The lower mileage car does have a very recent 'health check' report and video from Stratstones that looks positive.I could reject both of these and look elsewhere if that would be a better idea?
Depends on where the miles have come from.
High mileage motorway driving OK
High mileage town chariot no way.
One owner good so long as it's wasn't an OAP
Multi owners no good if it was a chav chariot for the aspiring boy racer.
I once bought a 96,000 mile 1.4 Escort Estate and kept it till it had 157,000 miles on the clock.
By the same token I bought a Peugeot 104 with 36,000 one careful OAP town driver and it was a mechanical disaster.

Worn out Jags are not renown for their reliability. Jag=Money Pit
Also expect a rather large bill for everything and the fact that half the parts you will need will not be off the shelf but manufacturer ordered items. Your garage or the dealership will love you for your custom, in fact you might want to buy shares with them.
Take the advice you have been given and steer clear.

Maybe it was the car, not the driver. High mileage motorway driving OK

The 150,000 mile car has been mostly motorway mileage, according to the owner. He has done 100,000 miles in it in his 10 year ownership, and has now bought an F-Type, so I suspect he has the means to look after it and it has had 16 services.High mileage motorway driving OK

The car with fewer miles is seemingly decent, with a new MOT and service and a clean bill of health from the Stratstone check, but there is the 11 owner thing…
