Hi guys,

Considering buying a 330D with the M Performance kit but unsure on whether to go for the xDrive or normal rear wheel drive. The xDrive does look a little higher but have heard that you can get lowering springs for it which make it sit nice again, also is there a big difference in the MPG between the two? I know the xDrive will be slightly less efficient but is it really that bad?

I have always had BMWs and love the RWD aspect of them, currently have a E60 535D which I will be selling to upgrade to a newer beemer, is the xDrive more desirable to people? Asking this as I have read a lot and watched youtube review who point out that the RWD model is more fun and just a better balanced car, would buying a RWD model affect resale and depriciation? Looking to buy it private and keeping it for 2 years

Thanks,

Shiv_P

Fuel economy will take a hit due to being slightly less aerodynamic & more powertrain component losses (4WD/AWD always have more losses due to increased friction etc) and of course more weight as well

If snow doesn't affect you too much I would just take the RWD variant, otherwise if I wanted xDrive personally I'd just buy an audi tongue out

Do you live in a mountainous, snow covered country?

No? Then don't ruin a perfectly good car with a load of un-necessary 4wd cobblers!

If it ever snows, a set of winter tyres will likely get you further than 4WD and let you stop quicker. I wouldn't bother on a 330D.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Did think it would be better to get a RWD, all my previous BMWs have been RWD and have not had any problems with the snow or anything as advised above a set of winter tyres will be enough if required! They look to be very rare tho have been looking all over eBay, Gumtree and Autotrader for a decent one, most of them are xDrives!

You will probably be just as well getting a 335d as they seem more common. Then you don’t have to worry about xDrive or not as there is no choice. I had one for a while although the F31 and it was pretty amazing, averaged about 40mpg could get in to the 50s on a long motorway run. But also capable of 0-60 in under 5 secs.

The only thing is it’s worth getting the LCI from 2016 onwards as the suspension is much better set up. Saying that though if you are going to lower it it may not make much difference but they do also get the led lights which look miles better.

If you get an X Drive then budget for fitting the springs as it really improve the ride on the X Drive models.
