Hi all,

Having moved house we now need to change the car from a fiesta to an estate. The journey is now a 120 mile round trip each day so want something high MPG and something with a large boot so the dogs can go in there and not on the back seats like they do currently.

Ideal budget would be less than £10,000 and have currently weighed up numerous options including VW Passat/Golf, Skoda Octavia/Superb, Seat Leon ST and BMW 320D Efficientdynamics.

Was wondering if anybody could actually shed some real mpg light on the issue though and some opinions as to what they would think would be my best options as currently going round in circles from one day thinking I will definitely go with a Golf to the next day thinking maybe I should check out a Merc just in case.

Any help would be appreciated!

What will your commute be like?

60 miles grinding along at 13mph on the M25?

Or a mix of road types and mostly free-flowing, relatively high-speed traffic?

Tends to be most free flowing traffic.. A few average speed traps so some of the route is 60mph but for the majority of the route it is 70-80mph motorway/dual carriageway driving.

Any estate on the VW MQB platform has an enormous boot which is what I needed. I chose a Leon for no other reason than the options it came with as standard suited me the most.

Mine has the 184bhp diesel engine which is the same as the Golf GTD and the Octiavia vRS. Now it's run in, it does high 40s if I drive quickly, and high 50s if I amble along on my 20 mile commute. I'm sure if I was careful on a longer journey I could get it into the 60s.

I would ignore everything I've said above though. With the millage you're doing I would pick any car based on the comfort of the seats and this is an individual thing.

I have exactly the same commute 4 days a week and normally use my Leaf.

But some days when I fancy a change I take the wife's V60 D3.

My commute is 50% A roads, 30% A1 20% town and it's averages 51ish mpg.

I have a heavy right foot and have seen nearly 60 if I take it easy.

£30 tax, well equipped, great seats and stereo.

The higher spec D4 or R Design have nicer wheels and styling but were out of budget when we were looking a year ago.

Should get a nice one for £10k now.

I'd say don't get to small an engine as they tend to have shorter gearing which means slightly lower economy on a run, also comfort becomes a big factor so don't dismiss a high spec but base 1.6 model may be better MPG but you won't be happy being in there 5 days a week & of course you need to buy something with sensible miles on in the first place as you'll piling on the mileage.

Here are some options:

Civic estate with the 1.6 dtec - nice to drive, incredible economy and a boot bigger than many estates in the class above. Clever boot/magic rear seats and Ex models are very well specified.

Im not sure of the mpg because it wasnt my car, but I recently spent a whole day covering a lot of miles in a Mondeo, it was extremely comfortable. It had a smooth shifting auto as well.

Renault Megane diesel is superb mpg and you will get newer higher spec for your money versus the vag/bmw products. On that very high mileage it makes sense as you will be killing the car and residuals are less relevant.

Cheers all. We have two sheepdogs (one old English, one welsh) so a large and medium dog. Currently in the fiesta they both lie down on the seat.

Will have to get looking and see what is about to have a test drive of locally and go from there 👍🏼
