Hi,

Looking to get a second hand BMW 1 series, promised myself after uni I would get one smile

Completely confused as to what I should go for. Live in central Scotland and frankly don't know enough about cars to decide what I should go for. Hoping for advice as to what I should be looking for with the car? diesel or petrol? mileage vs age? etc.

Budget is between £4k -£6k, doing city and motorway commuting etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading

Depends on the mileage you're doing, how new you want it, what kit you'd like, coupé or hatch..?

If you're doing lots of short journeys and not much mileage, get a petrol. If you're doing lots of longer journeys and high mileage then perhaps a derv. That said, there are far nicer 'small-engined' hatchbacks out there if you're looking at 114/116i variants... I had a 123d company car for several years and it was very good for a diesel (I was doing around 25k/yr miles). Would I buy one with my own money just because? No... If you can get a 1er with a 6-pot lump such as a 130i then that'd be a different matter.

I wouldn't really consider one unless it was 125, 135 or 130i. The rest of the petrol and diesel engines have various timing chain issues and really a golf or audi a3 is the better car

Wildcard - 6 bag gets you into one of these easily: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

or even:

any which will be a MUCH better steer than a boggo 116i for similar money...

So glad various people took the time to respond to the op who hasn't even bothered to respond back.

It's becoming standard operating procedure on PH these days , they start a thread read the information they do or don't like & that's the last you hear.

I even resisted the urge to just tell him to work out how Autotrader works and went to find helpful links just like you did.

Ho hum.

Don't worry about it I'll carry on doing the same, with or without a response from the OP.

So a lack of interest then!

I had a 123d for over 6 years - but like all N47 engines it had the cam-chain issues in the background.

So I sold it and moved to straight 6 N/A petrol engines - thankfully!

OP, if you ever drop by again don't buy a BMW with less than 6 cylinders (that's what my BMW Indy told me). laugh
