BMW 330d - Any advice?

To jump to the point, a family member is looking to replace their truck (Toyota Hilux) with a saloon car - specifically drawn to the 330d.

Their budget is around £10k with the option to stretch to £15k should there be a substantial difference in the quality of car available. I'll be honest, having run mainly petrol cars from my Clio Trophy, to Megane 275 and M3, I'm not sure what they should be on the lookout for (other than a decent spec) for a 330d - are there any pitfalls at certain mileages on the 330d outside of routine servicing or other vehicle options better suited for the budget?

They do around 20k a year currently.

I recommended getting a car equipped with the 1.9PD diesel like I did with my Passat and just run it into the ground, plus spend the remainder on some nice holidays, another car or towards other things... but they are fixed on getting something more modern.

Suggestions from owners or other leftfield choices welcome!
