Hi,

I currently don't have a commute and drive an '07 FN2 Type R with 59k on the clocks. I get on average 230 miles per tank (£65).

I'm thinking of possibly commuting into Manchester which is approx. 10 miles away. I don't want to put more miles on the Type R ideally or pay the extra in fuel, as it's really bad around town and in traffic.

My criteria is:

- reliable / jap
- petrol
- auto ideally
- very good MPG
- cheap insurance
- cheap tax

Is my answer going to be a Honda Jazz? biggrin

Depends where you are ?

Bus or tram could be better than the M60!

Bury, so I can avoid the M60.

Hate public transport so I'm considering a second car!

Yaris?

Or you could consider an EV if it's only 20 miles round trip?

I'd say a Smart car I enjoyed my one £0 Road Tax (it was the diesel one) 300-350 miles for just over £40 made it a no brainer for me, I'd still have one now if wasn't for the Motorbike which is even better, I was charged an £70 admin fee to add the Smart to my insurance.

The diesels are rarer & carry a premium over the petrols you'll want the 54bhp version.

For a 10 mile stop start commute an EV (used Nissan leaf) would be perfect. £2.50 to £3 for 80 to 100 miles. A typical diesel would be more than a tenner for that.

Only as long as you have space for a charge point at home though but it is soooo relaxing driving in silence. If my commute wasn't less than a mile I'd have one in a heartbeat.

If you are commuting into the centre of Manchester for normal working hours, google says it will take over an hour to do the 10 miles to get there. I couldn't stand driving in Manchester, so used to cycle or use a motorbike to get about.

A scooter / electric bicycle would probably be best. Or if you need to carry stuff / don't fancy dicing with traffic, an electric car would crawl along with the traffic nicely.

Exactly what I would go for unless you don't want to spend that much money. I work from home, but when I have to go into the office it is 105 miles so useless for me.

I have a shed Megane DCi, £30 annual road tax and will easily do 650 miles on £65 of diesel.

If I had a reasonable daily commute and a garage I would definitely get a leaf.

If it's going to take an hour to do 10 miles get one of these:

It'll take you around 20 minutes to do that commute & will have cost you pitance, you could do a direct access course, buy a decent Scooter & be fully kitted out for around 2.5k plus you'll have no stress no matter how bad the traffic is for everyone else.

I commuted daily in/out Manchester for years although I lived in the hills to the north

I could get home quicker than people I worked with that lived in Bury or Altrincham

The routes to from bury into the city are very congested and incredibly slow

With free parking at the Met and trams every six minutes at the peak why would you drive into town

The city council are doing their best to make getting around and through the centre nigh on impossible for private cars

I did it because I worked shifts and had a massive secure free car park at work .. plus a 40 plus mile journey back into the hills with no nearby public transport
