My daughter loves the performance/looks but not the build quality or after sales service she has had. Can anyone suggest an automatic hot hatch similarly good on mpg and general performance. She doesn't want ageing thirsty 3.0 V6 type stuff, a modern automatic super mini please. I just cannot think of anything bar a late Skoda Fabia vRS 1.4 and she says they're ugly!

This is going to be the best bet I think given the OP's brief.

I'd say the Ibiza Cupra it's the same car as the Polo but with more kit.

Echo the Polo / Ibiza suggestions, but be aware of the well documented issues with the 1.4 engine in these. Quite a few have had major issues.

There was a period when the Audi A1 was offered with a similar power output and a dsg box too.

We have a Cooper S convertible, its a great car, the gearbox is not as good as the ZF8 speed but is smoother than a DSG car, Performance is good, fuel consumption ours is showing 38mpg on really short trips. Build quality is good but it is a smaller car than the Clio.
