Hi everyone, first time posting.

I have a vw scirocco 210bhp dsg which I love, however I’ve got a new job which is 800 miles a month and it’s getting expensive to run, I’m wanting a new daily/winter car, which is cheap to tax and with good mpg as I’m on the motorway everyday. Not fussed on what kind of car, but just something I can use as a daily through winter. Don’t really want to spend more than £5-600 ideally. Thanks for any help!

Are you selling the Scirocco?
If not will you save money by running a second car?

Well I’m going to ask my insurance and see what they say, I’ll be taking my scirocco off the road so wouldn’t be paying road tax. Ideally if I found a car and taxed and insured it for 1k I’d be happy with that.

Best thing to do here is to try and find something that's had few owners, long MOT and got plenty of history/invoices. Its hard to pinpoint makes and models. Generally models that are deemed bland or unfashionable are good as bargain runabouts if they have been owned long term usually by an elderly person who has maintained it no expenses spared. Fords and Vauxhalls are good for cheap parts and Japanese petrol models are good for reliability. Look at the below models in your local small ads/Gumtree/Facebook marketplace and see what crops up.

Daihatsu Sirion/Charade
Ford Fiesta/Focus
Honda Logo/Civic
Mazda 2/Demio/323
Vauxhall Agila/Corsa/Astra
Nissan Micra/Almera
Toyota Starlet/Yaris/Corolla
Suzuki Alto/Swift

Look at Rovers too, 25s and 45s in particular. Good cars for the money and often elderly owned.

You won't have the pinnacle of refinement in any of these cars, but a good one should be reliable and serve you well.
