Mrs Greatgranny likes the idea of a convertible which will be suitable for her 35 mile round trip commute and occasionally my 120 mile round trip commute.

Needs to fit a very tall 11 year old and aa small 15 year old in the back for drives out.

We like the Saab 9-3 and the C70 and maybe the EOS.
Also A4 is a possibility.

Don't like the Peugeots, Renaults, Vauxhalls or Fords.

Mini too small in the back.

Beetle just no

Any others I've forgotten?

Needs to be able to do 35mpg ish so it's not too expensive to run.

Budget £3.5k - £4k.

Thanks

BMW 3 Series or Mercedes CLK are where I'd look.

CLK not one I'd thought of thanks

Should have put 3 series in my OP, well it's on mine. I've owned several Beemers and am a big fan.
Think wife not sure of them but hopefully a test drive will change her mind.

Think the Audi A4 Cabriolet was made by Karmann in Osnabruck, along with the Mercedes CLK. The A4 is like a Panzer tank underneath, I believe the B7 use a lot of heavy duty suspension parts, arms etc off the A8.

I've got up to £4k :-) so 2 series out.

Sorry don't like the A3 and it looks too small in the back for kids.

CLK too expensive to run says Mrs GG and she doesn't like the styling.

Think Saab is current front runner, followed by Volvo and 3 series may make a late surge.

Re: a3 we have a 12 plate one and have a 6 foot 17 year old and slightly shorter 14 year old. They fit fine in the back.

We are thinking of selling it if interested pop over a PM

I've got a Saab 9-3 'vert which I bought just over two years ago for £2500

It's been great. Very reliable (a new rear calliper, exhaust rear box and new spark plugs being the full extent of repairs in my ownership)
Mine is the 2.0 turbo which had 175hp, but I had it Noobtuned at Easter so it is now 220hp and torque is up by something like 40%. Well worth the £90 it cost. Fuel consumption hasn't been affected - i average 32mpg around town and about 42mpg on a steady motorway run.
Boot is spacious, with quite a lot of room even with the roof down. Back seat are fine for an hour or two even for normal sized adults.

Other cars we looked at were the Volvo C70 (which felt very heavy and lumbering to drive in comparison to the Saab), the CLK (most seemed to have rust issues) and the Audi A4 (nice, but much more expensive without seeming to offer any advantage over the Saab)

Excellent boyse7en, just what I needed.

Yes think Saab is favourite just because it's ideal for what we want and is good value IMO.

Petrol ones seem to be cheaper overall than the diesels and MPG from what you have said seems to be respectable.

Just an update if anyone interested.

Went to view an Audi A4 which looked good on the photos but turned out to be a bit of a dog.

However decided A4 was a nice car and is equal in the running with the Saab.

Wife has decided S Line spec is the one to go for with full leather and heated seats (one which we looked at had heated rear as well which was unusual) but there are many near us so now going down to London to view one tomorrow.
Low mileage S Line with FSH, 12 month MOT and in black.

Seen a Saab also in Bedford so will view that on the way down and make a day of it with my 11 year old son.
I've bribed him with unlimited sweets, Maccys for lunch and a drive by Wembley and any other stadiums we pass nearby :-)

I bought from a garage a 70K miles 2009 saab diesel last week for £6000 and about 3 years ago a 145K miles 2005 saab petrol for £2500.

Both good buys, well built and cheaper than the equivalent german cars.

Got back 9:15pm last night after a successful day car buying.

Here's photo from original advert

Son at Kings cross

Home after 3.5 hour drive with 1 stop for food.

Averaged 48mpg and was great apart from high wind noise from the top of the passenger side window which hopefully is easy to fix.
Going to give it a thorough clean inside and try to polish out some of the small scratches on the bodywork at the weekend.
