Your suggestions please

Hello peeps,

The lease is going back soon plus a change in circumstances (happily the kids don't want me staying away from home) means that I won't be needing a mile muncher for the foreseeable future.

I will be needing something to get me through to a new place of work in the Yorkshire dales, (so I'm thinking 4x4 although nothing up muddy tracks etc.)

Projected mileage is around the 15000 per year but I've no preference between petrol or diesel (ok, I'd probably choose petrol)

MPG isn't really an issue unless it's lower than the low 20s.

Road tax again not really a deciding factor.

So, what do I want, in terms of drive, I'm more of a wafter than an edge of the seat experience. I'd also like something that doesn't spend a lot of time getting repairs fixed. But I'm aware that it is nice to get into something that you like in the morning to get to work and if the price of that is the occasional trip to the garage then so be it.

No garage, parked on the drive.

I asked the boss how much can I spend she said 5k so if it comes in less than 7k I'm home and hosed!

The Lexus GS450h is what I'm all about, I love it, however the old shape RX is pretty interesting too.

The audi is smart but I don't trust the German brands about reliability much, having said that I've always like the touareg but worried about it turning into a money-pit.

MX-5 is a great car but just not for me.

Given you want comfort then I guess the XC90 should be up there, the Discovery 3 would meet your needs apart from reliability.

The Subaru forester might give you the best of both worlds, performance and comfort. The Kuga 2.5t is a rare car but way above your budget. You then have the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fee or even the mundane Vauxhall Antera. Honda CRV's are reasonable too

I'd say something like a Mercedes CLS these really have bulletproof drivetrains & fit the wafting side of things well & imo they've aged well.

Thanks ZX10! From the list I love the 5.0l CLS and the colour combination of the lexus. One question, I read ages ago on honest john that there was an upgrade in 2007 which had like 2000 improvements on it (it's the one with the venetian blinds on the headlights). Is that much a big of a deal when looking at buying a 10+ year old car?

In a word no if you can afford a the upgraded one then yes they're worth a look but at this price I'd buy on spec & condition.

If you can stretch to a 5.5 500 they're worth seeking out.
