A few deciding factors to throw spanners in the works.

Don't want a money pit that's going to financially ruin me with repairs. So reliability is a must.

I'm 6ft4 so no tiny cramped cars.

Something that will hold some value over time?

I don't mind putting an exhaust on to enhance some noise.

So far all I have in mind is a monaro. Any other suggestions?

Apart from your money pit potential caveat a Maserati Quottroporte would have been the answer smile

A TVR Chimaera 400 would be a good shout. Can a decent one still be got for £10k? Space shouldn't be an issue

Alternatively, anything with an Alfa Busso perhaps? 156/147 GTA or GTV/GT?

Porsche 996 with the sports exhaust. Will be a push to find a decent one in budget.

I discounted the TVR on reliability and chassis problems I believe.

Most cars will have had new outriggers by now and it's not something that will go wrong again for quite a while. Granted there will be bad ones out there too. If it is more than the outriggers corroded then other chassis rot will be a big job.
Get a sorted one and the RV8 TVRs are very reliable.

Get a good one and it will reward you with a great sound. Either an Alfa ROMEO 156 GTA or 147 GTA. Should not lose a penny at £10k. A uk car should be a better bet but there is quite a few Jap imports around for sale that do look pretty tidy.

Subaru with a SS exhaust, ample aural pleasures to be heard up to in or around 7/8k rpm - the 3 litre n/a probably sounds better than the import turbos (especially with raptor headers) - reliability a given so forget any Maserati unless you intend to keep it a few months

Golf R32 or 350z, neither is exotic, but both have nice sounding V6 with a good exhaust.

I can't think of a worst sound than an Impreza with a modified exhaust! Hateful sound!

My suggestion, BMW M5 (E39) or something different - 5 Cylinder Focus ST smile

Hence me giving the nod to the flat 6 which sounds far better.

Pretty much any V8 with a bit of exhaust work. Lots of S Audi's, Mercs, and 6 Series BMWs around for that budget. There's a nice red 550i near me for a fair bit less than £10k as well.

6 cylinders I quite like the sound of that VAG 3.2 and it comes in lots of cars from the TT up to estates. There's a Passat estate 3.2 near me for less than £5k that is very, very tempting right now.

Surely for the budget you would want a V8. I believe there are many under 10k and some pretty reliable ones too. Look at the German cars I'm sure you'll find one to your tastes.

Monaro would be my shout.

It's is a good list, if LHD is not an issue then Camaros, Firebirds, trans ams are options to.

Also consider Nissan R33 Skylines, 370z, and Toyota Supra/Soarers

perhaps a bmw 135i might also sneek into budget for more i6 turbo noises
