Ports at Cairnryan in Scotland, Liverpool in England, Holyhead in Wales (to Dublin then drive up)
Personally i'd be looking at ones near airports, then just drive the car to the nearest port.
I hadnt been aware of pricing ambiguities of the scale you are suggesting on Golfs here in NI? Have you specific examples?
Its not hard to bring a car back to Ni, there are several transport companies that specialise in bringing used cars across to Ni from all over England Scotland and Wales.
Do your research online and fly into a major city and taxi it to a few dealers to look at cars that you've selected and either do a deal and drive to the nearest ferry or walk away and fly home again.
Or deal over the phone from the comfort of your own home and pay roughly 250 to 350 to get the car delivered to your door/ local agreed place 3-7 days later.
Price difference is obviously dependant on where the car is purchased from, Manchester Liverpool, Birmingham M6 area will be cheaper than Inverness or Ipswich.

The part above was correct however distance selling has stopped dealers selling cars over the phone / online to private buyers without the purchaser inspecting on site prior to purchase.
I sold a nearly new Audi last week to a private buyer from NI, he called on Monday, I confirmed the car was unmarked, we agreed a price and I took a holding deposit.
Thursday he flew into Gatwick with his son, train and bus to us, checked the car, paid, completed RFL and change of keeper online before confirming his insurance and they drove away.
He was going straight to Liverpool and had it booked on as a rental car with reg tba.
