New Family Car - Skoda Octavia VRS Estate or Volvo V60 Rdes?
Discussion
Hey everyone
Just wondering if anyone can help me. Anyone own either of these cars? How are they as a family car and day to day running?
I've currently got 65 plate Volvo V40 Rdesign D3 but feel it's a little on small side for our family, me and my wife and our 1 year old daughter. I find that the boot is easily filled by the pram and that's it, can't fit nothing else in.
Now the options for the new family car is Skoda Octavia VRS or Volvo V60. I know th Volvo will be familiar territory as I've got the V40 now but is the V60 an ample family car? I'm wanting to move away from diesel I've currently got on V40 but from what I can see it's only Polestar V60 that are petrol which is way out of budget, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Due to this it got my looking at the Skoda Octavia VRS Estate, it's a really nice looking car, again I would be interested to hear your views on this car.
I want to try and get this car right and basically try and future proof it especially if our family grows in future so would be interested to hear how these cars cope with 2 or more children.
Thanks everyone

When looking at petrol estates I'd be looking for the Mondeo when I had the option of an Octavia VRS or a Mondeo I chose the Mondeo as I found it the better car.

We had an Octavia for 3 years from new. Faultless car with unbelievable mpg for the size of it. The only downside, was the interior, although well made, was quite dull and uninspiring. Cavernous car though, comfortable, excellent economy, plenty of gadgets and cheaper than it's competitors!
It's only just gone to be replaced by the new Tiguan.

Petrol V60 come in a few flavours of petrol engine, 1.6t, 2.0t and the 3.0.
2.0t looks like the pick of the bunch with a good mix of performance and economy although I can't give a definitive answer as I have a D5. It is a heavy car, especially if you have the geartronic automatic, so economy will never be the best.
Inside, it will be familiar to you and it is a nice place to be. Aim for R-design or a SE Lux as these will have all the toys although the ride can be a bit firm on the R-design or on wheels bigger than 18 inch. The boot however is not the biggest despite being an estate mainly due to the sloping rear roof but is ample for me but you must check if it big enough for you (take your pram along and judge for yourself) and I do think the the VRS has a bigger boot.
Might want to look for the family pack as that has an integrated booster seat which is quite cool and handy.
I did also look at a Octavia and while I liked it, the Volvo felt a nicer place to be and a big better quality to be honest.

I’m on the hunt for a new car. Currently have a Volvo S60 D5 and with a roof box is suits the family but the wife does like a big car.
My heart is set on a Golf R estate but I do worry about the MPG as I know I’ll get no more that 25mpg.
The Volvo T6 above is £560 a year to tax and will drink the fuel.
The option I am looking at is the Passat BiTdi with a twin turbo. The estate has great reviews and still goes well and get 40 plus to the gallon.
Skoda VRS petrol is also on my radar but they are hard to get hold off in petrol and DSG and my theory is that they won’t me much better on fuel than the DSG Golf R so if I do go VW I might as well go for the most powerful option

Just ordered a new V60 T5.
Family is 2 adults, 3 teenage boys, 2 dogs, 3 kayaks to go on the roof, 2 enduro bikes to be trailered and 2 MTB to go on a tow bar rack......so better be big enough!
Although I've been doing all that lot with an A45 the last 2 years!
One thing I've learnt after 4 kids - DONT screw your life up with lame "family" picks. At some point they move out and you are left with memories of having driven crappy cars to fit around others. My kids want to be comfy in a car? Work hard at school, get a good job and buy a comfy car...until then shut up and hang on tight in the back of whatever fast thing I am currently driving! My daughter had no issues falling asleep in my TVR 20 years ago with the roof down. Obviously, no room for a pushchair so she learnt to walk pretty quick
Tiggsy parenting advice....I should write a book

I was in a regular Octavia estate recently and was surprised how roomy it was considering it has the same chassis as a Golf. Interior is quite dull as said above but quality is good though I’d imagine the Volvo being a level above.
If you want the more comfortable cruiser go for the Volvo. Something more interesting to drive then the VRs.
Also the Skoda Superb estate might be worth a look if you want even more space. The 2.0 TSI 280 variant is a great Q car

.Have you driven the Octavia's? Ive rented quite a few, most notably a 2.0tdi estate that i did around 4000 in around Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro. They are very white goods imho, would I buy one for family duties, yeah maybe, would I want to drive it, no.
As Ninja said, id almost certainly buy a Mondeo over it. They do drive much better and have a more interesting design.
You mention future proofing, 2 or more children is always going to be cramped in a 5 seater, what about an S-Max?

We had a VRS Estate from new for 4 years (TSI Manual).
We said goodbye to it in June and it is one car that we were gutted to let go. It was brilliant in every way and served our growing family well swallowing everything we could throw at it. Unfortunately ferrying around elderly parents and kids at the same time was a stretch too far and a 7seater was required.
For me the VRS all day long.....................unless you're talking about the new V60 which looks very nice.

We have a 2014 Octavia VRS 2.0 TSI manual estate as the family vehicle that replaced an A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI SLine. We much prefer the VRS to drive and live with.
We have 2 boys and find it quite roomy (the chassis is stretched from the golf), loads of room in the boot, good fuel economy, cheap enough servicing. It goes well, great engine and you don't notice much difference when fully loaded. When I was searching I had a search set up on Autotrader with alerts and it took a couple of months for the right car to come along as I wanted a few options. We ended up getting one with almost every option fitted.
My work has some 2017 1.6tdi SEL hatches and estates as pool cars. They are ok, ride a bit better, but are quite dreary inside and out and have uncomfortable hard seats. They easily get over 60mpg no matter how you thrash them though!

We've had our VRS Estate for 18 months and 40K miles. Its fantastic and really hard to fault. Rear leg room is best in class by a long way.
Its going back in Jan so I've been looking at the new V60 Estate as replacement. Its not as big. The V90 is a better comparison.
The only negative to the Octavia is the faux leather seats get hot in summer, some of the plastics are not as hard wearing and more difficult to get clean inside. Externally it seem to get more stone chips, loose trim and paint blemishes than German and Swedish stuff I've had before.
Another think about the Octavia is the touchscreen is so easy to use and coming from years on idrive this was a revelation.

I'm in a similar boat but I'm going from a 66 plate Octy Diesel VRS Hatch to 2019 V60 T5 Momentum. Looks like a big step up in quality of build if not quality of drive. Expecting a significant drop in economy, but I can deal with that. And hoping I'll see a space increase rather than the decrease you've seen going from estate->estate.Its going back in Jan so I've been looking at the new V60 Estate as replacement. Its not as big.
