As there are a lot of used ones about and not a lot of £££££s, would an Insignia Estate family hack seem acceptable to someone who likes driving and has owned various Fords, and latterly a Mk4 Mondeo Estate? I know the boot is a bit smaller and steering less feelsome.

If so, which spec is the one to look for?

Looking at the figures, 170bhp or Biturbo (or petrol turbo) would be preferable.

Toys and baubles are not really an issue, but cruise control, DAB and/or an Aux input would be desirable.

I like good steering, but prefer smaller wheels and a non-harsh ride.

Cheers.

All I can say is I used to drive an insignia quite a lot as a company car. Drove a Mondeo a few times. Much preferred the Mondeo

MK4 Mondeo estate every time

Insignia pales in comparison. Want something different the best alternative is a superb estate

I'd say the MK4 but you do normally get a newer loded Insignia, drive both & then decide.

The Insignia has terrible dead, artificially-weighted steering. Has it's uses but not a car for someone who enjoys driving. Would take the Mondeo (or similarly well-mannered Mazda 6) every time.
