Looking to buy an estate and have no need/desire for a diesel. Requirements:

- Decent power (250 BHP+)
- Sensible MPG (let's say 30 or more)
- Max £20k
- Sensible running costs

For reference current car is M135i and I'd like something with similar power, reliability and driving dynamics. Any ideas welcome!

You'll get a late (maybe 16 plate) Focus ST for around that. I bought one (new) last year and I'm very happy with it. Try and get one with the Sync 3 system - it's a big improvement on the Sync 2 kit.

I'd agree, although mpg might be an issue.

You might get 18 if your lucky.

I have one of these. They are bd fast when you want, super refined when you wish and ultra practical when you need, yet still return 31mpg across everything.

Mine is an ex demonstrator and has auto park, auto lights, HUD, big Nav and a whole bunch of other stuff. They are mega rare but a superb compromise.

My wife has the sync 3 in her Mustang. It’s very, very good indeed.

Unless you drive like a saint then you'll not see anything near the required mpg.
I don't drive gently, but I struggle to better mid 20's mpg on anything other than a slow A road run. On the motorway at a constant 70mph I only see early 30's mpg.

Having had these these requirements a few years ago, vanishingly rare.

Anything premium will be a diesel. Estates doubly so.
We looked for 4 months, and had a choice of 2 535i’s, an e60 M5, an e500 and a pair of E63’s. Oh, and a 3.6 Skoda 4x4.

The M5 and E63’s were clearly batst insane.
Both 535’s were sold before I got to them.
The Skoda was a good car, but missed something.
We bought the 500.

That's still £35k after discount and before any options though, and the OP has a £20k budget.

I ran one for 2 years and almost 24k miles and averaged over 35mpg........on a constant 70 mph motorway run I often saw in excess of 40mpg.....

anything petrol which is big and fast from the last 10 years is getting rare/expensive. i had the same conundrum. tried v70/t5; bmws and mercs but very little around. i eventually settled on an Audi C6 Avant 4.2. Lovely drive and quick when it wants to be. 23mpg through france (only 2mpg worse than my old diesel remapped XC90 d5)

Seconded, I have one currently and it is averaging around 32 mpg, that's with a heavy right foot where possible (my commute is A and B roads). Saw 46 mpg (indicated) whilst sitting at 70 mph.

Overall it's a great car, would highly recommend if your budget will stretch.
