Usual What Car? Request...

After driving around in a 14 year old Volvo v50 T5 the wife’s finally given me permission to upgrade. She’s still pretty tight out cash so I’ve only got about 12k to spend.
I’d rather another nice estate, but she’s adamant that she wants something bigger/higher/safer. She also wants something “fancy”...
The shopping list so far is down to; Range Rover sport (10 plate), cayenne (09 plate), X5 or a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
We only use it in the weekend for trips with the little one so MPG not an issue.
Have test driven RRS and Cayenne (both diesels) but slightly nervous about them blowing up after 3 months. RRS seems very comfortable with nice interior. Cayenne nice to drive but dated interior. Jeep looks the nicest. BMW maybe best alround and just missed out on a good one.
Is it completely stupid to buy a 80-90k mile 9 year old car? Is it a way of getting a bit of old luxury for cheap or a Road to ruin. Definitely don’t want to end up in a Qashai or similar...

I'd say go for a petrol model if MPG isn't an issue then you get a lot of SUV for your money, what's your budget?

Budgets about 13k, so most of these are outside that sadly, plus trying to keep it within 10 years old as well so some are a bit too old. Don’t want to replace and old car with an equally old one!
Would love to hear from anyone with one of the ones listed and if they’ve been as much trouble as some people say, or if it’s just issues any car can have.

Nice, sadly I think the ffrr is slightly too long to fit in the garage! It would have about 3cms to spare. Then the Jeep is the best bet as you'll get a great SUV for that price point the drivetrain is very good & you'll just land a gen2.

Yes, that’s close to the top of the list as it’s looking quite modern, got a few gadgets and should be solid. Missed some of the glam of the others but might be the safest bet.

However, in your position OP I'd just go buy the nearest one that meets the requirements then when it inevitably s
ts itself and throws up a bill for several thousand £ you can tell the wife it serves her right for demanding something "bigger and fancy" yet only giving you £12k to achieve this goal. Moon on a stick.

I thought it was a great big thing. Had to replace some suspension bushes and also the glow plug control unit, but apart from that it was spot on. Great performance and comfortable to drive.
Initially I had looked at X5's and a Toureg, but the jeep was far better value for money.
I'd happily get another.

Personally I would look for an Infiniti FX, as you'll get a better car for your money than with the Germans. The Dodge Nitro is also superb value for money.
Ha ha, good timing. Booked in to see one tomorrow. Very different but with a load of toys. Wife not so sure as she’s never heard of them before, but she’d like to be in it I’m sure. - viewing cancelled as wife doesn’t want one as she’s never heard of them. Now looking to take sensible offers on the wife. Willing to drop the price if needed **
